I saw a tweet (from a woman!) the other day that says playing video games boosts empathy bc you're exploring a world as a different character. I'm sorry but LOL NO. I have played a lot of video games and I have a very imaginative mind, but I've never while playing tried to imagine how the characters feel and put myself in their shoes. Even in an RPG. The only entertainment that has strengthened my capacity for empathy are books and acting in theater.

Same. I play video games and do better than 95%+ of the male players I have encountered. And I know clearly that game addiction is an addiction. There is no excuse like self-improvement bullshit. It is ironic how those nerds are trying to mansplain in such a retarded way like women know nothing about video games.
Also guys who are obsessed with the virtual gaming world are literally all LVM/NVM. Even as a gamer myself, I would never consider dating even one of them.

I love video games, and I do think that a lot of RPG fans get really deep into the lore of certain games & actually show some empathy for them. But I've never ceased to be amazed at the complete dissonance between how empathetic many are with fictional characters & races versus real life people and groups on whom the fictional characters are clearly based. One easy example is that powerful females characters who don't take shit are generally pretty popular in games. Not so much in real life, especially among the archetypal male gamer.
Perhaps it makes sense in theory that games would build empathy. But in practice? They clearly don't.
