They're relatively the same universally. I lived in rural Japan for 2 years as a preschool teacher and the NVMs there were just as misogynistic (if not more) and incredibly racist. One thing I learned living in Asia- many cultures have a tendency to be nationalistic. In Japan there seemed to be this purity complex- marrying anyone that isnt pasty white and 'pure blooded' japanese was looked down upon. How white you are determined your social class and how people treated you. (Similar to here). There was plenty of trashy men, however they did work harder and were still more likely to honor tradition and pay for dates...

I often think some aspects of rural culture in the US are spinoffs from the old Master/Serf dynamic in many places in Europe. I’m going to generalize a lot here... just seems as if history has a pattern... and some of it doesn’t just apply to rural areas.
Back in old Europe (Russia, too), Churches and the ruling elite shoved religious concepts like “submission to your lord and master”, and “education will lead you to eternal damnation and hellfire” down the throats of the rural impoverished people (who were literally the slaves of the wealthy). There was also a constant push to encourage oversized families among the rural poor because “lots of children = more cheap labor”... this also meant they reinforced the idea that women must submit to their husbands. Female subservience and perpetual pregnancy among the rural “serfs” helped enrich the land owning class and kept the male serfs tame and less likely to revolt. Discouraging education kept the poor from gaining better work. The poor men felt they could dominate their wives and children, therefor felt they could “have control/power”, so they obeyed authority above them. In old Europe, the serfs on the masters estate also had to serve in war whether they liked to or not, so it was in their masters best interest to increase nationalism and ultra-patriotism and loyalty among them.
Now, instead of getting their news and propaganda at the pulpit, rural people are exposed to media that often repeats the same ideologies. Obedience to authority. Glorification if hierarchy. Nationalism. Blind patriotism. Acceptance of relative poverty in comparison to their “betters”. Misogyny. Xenophobia. Religious extremism. Some rural conservatives are going as far as to ask if it would be better for the US to have a monarchy!
It also seems like in these land estates in Europe, the landowners often considers certain ethnic groups of people as better “workers” than others. Groups of people would be encouraged to migrate from one spot in Europe to another in order to work based on their ethnicities and religious beliefs. In the US, people were both brought over here via paid contracts (indentured servitude) AND outright slavery for the same reasons. This is part of the reason why there are large pockets of certain ethnic groups in some parts of the US and not others. Rich Old Europe exported their plantation economy to the US. Many countries in Europe as well as Russia outlawed slavery in their nations before the US did.
This seemed to ignite all sorts of bizarre eugenic ideas in all sorts of directions... and weird ethnic/racial castes among the lower class people in the US. For example, white rural people I’ve known (who were often completely destitute) seemed to feel that they were still somehow “superior” to equally poor minorities who live nearby. You’d think they’d identify more politically with those who share the same hardships in terms of poverty, but they don’t. I think a ton of this has to do with political indoctrination, religious indoctrination... since that was the same method used by powerful and wealthy leaders for generations. There was a long period of time that Irish Americans, for example, were considered “inferior” to other Americans... a hold over from “the old country”. Divide and conquer the poor folk and they’re easier to control. So much of history repeats itself.

Yes, everything you said! Your comment resonates so much with me. Lately I find myself frequently thinking about the redundant cycles in history that continue to repeat themselves. The blatant ignorance in the US is really aggravating to me because this day in age- historical information is far more available and impossible to evade even in the most isolated of communities (via internet, school). But these racist, bigoted groups will actively reject progressive movements and scientific facts. It's getting harder for me to feel sympathy for people like this because many white people will choose to remain ignorant because their too prideful to appear vulnerable or wrong. They deliberately live in denial. Even if their position is working against their advantage, they continue to display this stubborn behavior. Its mind-boggling that anyone alive in 2020 continues to defend this type of thinking. Thanks for your inquisitive reply!
