Firstly well done for having a go at something new. My response got a bit long...I guess your post really resonated with how I have felt in the past. It happens a lot less now!

I won’t address whether or not you should go on this date, that’s for you to decide. So if you’re determined to go on this date despite your doubts, here’s how you could frame it.

1) Take all the necessary safety precautions which I won’t list, except to say that you really should chat with him briefly on the phone first. If your negative instincts actively go up as a result of this call, then maybe don’t go on the date because I would say this is a guaranteed waste of your time at best, or a safety risk at worst. 2) Before the date, write as much detail down as you can about how you feel. Doubts, warning signs, minor niggles, everything, even reasons for wanting to go anyway. 3) Go on the date. You will probably be disappointed. Mission accomplished. 4) Reflect on how you did actually know that you wouldn’t be compatible from the start, and read back over what you wrote down. See that those tiny signs weren’t just tiny, ok they were tiny but they were significant. 5) Now you know that your instincts are right. Next time you feel like you can’t really be bothered to go on that date, drown out the voice that says ‘give him a chance’/ ‘you never know’ / ‘it’s rude to cancel’, and instead listen to the voice that says ‘I already KNOW that me and this guy aren’t right for each other, I don’t need any more information, and I trust myself. I don’t feel guilty and I will instead spend the time doing something worthwhile.’

Just here to comment I'm over this whole beard trend. They are incredibly unhygienic, and bad for our skin.

Here’s my recommendation since it appears you’ve already made up your mind to go.

Be outcome independent. Since you don’t really like him, it would be easy to do. Just go enjoy the free dinner.
Great opportunity to test out FDS, like letting him pay/not offer to split, initiate the end of the date..etc.
The secret to male attraction is class/femininity. So know this and just practice being in tune with your femininity. You are the prize, you are the queen, let him work, let him chase.
Be conversational, but avoid being the one that cuts the awkward silences or initiate topics.

Of course safety, I always send my sister screenshots of the guy’s profile, phone number, any identifying info I had learned about him during the course of the convo and address and name of the venue. And we always tell each other how long we think the date is going to be, so she text/calls me around this time, and we have a very simple script on how this convo should . Any deviation, means I am in trouble, call 911.
