Hello beloved sisters!
I wanted to share my thoughts and experience with men and housework today. As we all know, men tend to do alot less regarding housework and raising their children than their female partners. And as we all know, that's a no-go in a fair relationship.
After being a dumb girl, living together with a human pig who was overwhelmed with washing his own ass at times, I swore to myself that I would never ever do more than the fair share of housework. Luckily my husband is a clean, diligent man, who was raised to help and do his part.
To make things as smooth as possible, we made a plan with daily and weekly chores.
Everything that has to be done. Taking out the trash, sweeping the floor, tidying up the bathroom, you get the idea.
We calculated how much time it takes to do one task. So taking out the trash is 5 minutes, putting the dishes into the dishwasher is 10 minutes and so on.
We calculated how much times it takes to clean every room in our apartment (we have ~8 rooms here). Every week we switch our cleaning plans, so everyone has to clean everything at one point.
Our daily cleaning time is around 1 hour for each one of us. We have a thorough clean-up every 6 months and we do it together. There is no "I am done with my cleaning, so I chill out", we help each other until everything is clean and we can rest TOGETHER.
My husband is fully able to clean everything up. There is nothing that I would consider to be "done better by myself" because he strives for a tidy home just as much as I am.
So what if anyone of us gets sick or isn't able to clean up? It's simple, the other one does 100% of the workload. There is no moaning or bitching on my husbands part and I also have no problem to clean up the whole programm for some time(!). While I was pregnant and after birth, my husband did 100% of the housework alone (in 90% of the time). I was "working hard enough making a human being" he said (he was right).
Cooking is also something we tend to do together. I love to try new dishes and my husband is basically helping with chopping the veggies or marinating the meat every single time. He is interested in learning to cook nice food for me (and our son). I am cooking around 4 times a week. My husband cooks 2-3 times a week. We go out at least once a month, but usually cooking together is much more fun. Sure we surprise each other with a nicely cooked meal, but most of the time we prepare food together.
Now that I am a SAHM, it's more difficult to maintain a healthy balance. My husband works full-time and in shifts. Our baby is a 24/7 job. For now I try to do my part of the plan, but if I can't make it, my husband will just do the tasks for me. Whenever he is at home, he takes care of the baby so I can either sleep a couple of hours or do something for myself (makeup, drawing, writing, reading, etc) I also give him a couple of hours "off" so he can relax.
Whenever a man says that it's "not possible" to share the chores evenly, he's just not willing to do it. Whenever a man says that he's "too tired" to take care of his child for at least a couple of hours, he is saying that his wellbeing is more important than yours.
Don't let lazy men get away with that. If he can't even keep to a clean-up plan, what else is he not able to do? That's LV behavior and we women deserve more.
