How much does gift actually matter?

It isn't a red flag if he tries to compensate the lack of money with thoughtfulness. It can be cheap but at least make it great.

As another poster stated, some cheap gifts are incredibly thoughtful. How do you classify that? Well, thoughtful gifts are the ones that you can easily tell he actually thought about whether that's making an album of your favorite memories (relatively cheap, incredibly thoughtful), writing you a poem or anything that's low cost but takes time and a level of sincerity.

The only issue with cheap gift givers is their reasoning, I have noticed most real adults that have their spending habits under control and have full-time jobs can afford to splurge occasionally. So you have to wonder where they're spending their money

It’s more about the effort rather than the cost. If he’s in dire straits but can thoughtfully plan something (a homemade gift, a date with a picnic and nice walk or whatever) it shows he cares about you.

Even when it comes to money the same rule applies. For example, a $100 gift from a guy making a 30k salary shows he probably cares more than the guy making 100k who gives the same gift.

I’m not a gift person. I feel awkward receiving gifts and sometimes even giving them. I think quality time, genuine interest, and experiences are way more important. Obviously this isn’t how everyone feels, but to me this would not be a red flag at all.
