So I do two subjects for my degree and in a few weeks I'm going to have to pick out my classes for next year (the year I graduate). Since I began university, it's become obvious to me I do much better in exams compared to essays (last year I had one class where it was 50% essay and 50% exam. In the essay I got a 55 which is mediocre but in the exam I got a 78, which is really good). The plan for me was to pick up classes in my final year that play on my strengths.

I spoke to the head of the French department and he said because my exam grades were much better than my essay subjects it was best if the department didn't let me do a dissertation just because they wanted to ensure I graduated with a good grade. On the one hand, I'm relieved that I've got a green light saying I don't have to do a dissertation and I can pick exam based classes but I also can't help feeling bad that I'm not doing one. I can do well in essays if it's a topic I'm genuinely interested in but I also feel like I'm failing myself by not doing a diss because it's something that's considered to be the go to thing to do in final year.

This isn't boy related I know but is anyone able to relate or give some advice? Everyone else seems to be doing one and it's daunting knowing I'm not going to be doing one.
