I don’t know about the article, but the book Sex at Dawn describes this in detail. The first half is pretty dry, but the last half is INCREDIBLY fascinating. The premise being that until modern day agriculture required paternity certainty to pass wealth from generation to generation, men didn’t really have claim over just one woman and all women and children were cared for because no one really knew who fathered whom. Some tribes believing that multiple men needed to be with a woman to get her pregnant and pass on skills to the baby.

In our current society, I still feel like monogamy is safest for women. But it was an eye opening read. One of the huge take aways I got was men studying a matriarchal tribe. But they decided this tribe was patriarchal because they saw men in positions of power and influence. There was narrative about how threatened men feel, because they only imagine matriarchy through a patriarchal lens, are afraid of it, because patriarchy is so violent.

If you do read the Sex at Dawn book, it’s largely supportive of non-monogamy. And while I do not think that is best in today’s society, it’s still a worthwhile read, as an example of how our sexuality has been manipulated at the hands of men who have wanted increasingly more power and control.

I saw a different take on monogamy. Yes, female chimps have sex with every male in a group to confuse paternity but they do it out of desperation and to protect their children because male chimps may kill others' offsprings but won't kill ones that have at least tiny possibility to be their own. So basically there was no time in history and evolution when women could have sex just for pleasure
