Has he proven he's interested in you properly? Has he been good about scheduling dates and making time for you? Has he been considerate of your schedule and what's going on in your life? Does he reply to you within a reasonable period of time? Have you guys made an official commitment and has he still been consistent in his affection since?

If all of the above is not a 'yes', then signs point to no - do not ever text first.

Eh, I think it depends. If he has something going on like a stressful work assignment, a sick family member, an important event, etc. ... I will sometimes text first to show my support. As far as planning dates or time spent together? No. That is totally on him.

Imo there’s no need to apply the handbook rules as if it were the Bible like a robot. In certain conditions it’s obviously ok to text first. Actually it’s bad to overthink it. If, for example, we had a conversation during a date about a certain book, movie, whatever and I see an article or blog about it I’ll send it to him without any second thought. Just having normal discussions. Now do you want to text him out of clingy-ness just to check if he’s still into you? Definitely not. So my rule is text him if you’ve got something interesting to say (don’t do it every time ofc).
