Thanks for posting this article - I read it and thought it was razor sharp.

It discusses the idea that men rely on women to "reign them in" when they act in inappropriate ways. As if they can't manage their own tempers and emotions.

That it is a womans job to to curate HIS behaviour.

In workplaces around the country this dynamic often plays out with the women in the group expected to play the Mummy role and let the guys know when they’ve gone too far.

It gives the men unspoken license to constantly test the boundaries of acceptable behaviour because the women are there to reiterate the boundaries. It’s often dismissed affectionately as ‘boys being boys’.

I think I’m speaking for a lot of women when I say, guys (#notallguys) we are tired of being your moral compasses. It’s a boring, repetitive job and we don’t want it anymore.

We no longer want to be the eye-rolling, long-suffering sidekicks to your wacky antics. (Maybe we want to get a bit wacky and have you shoulder the responsibility for a change.)

We hereby hand the responsibility for your behaviour – fidelity, social mores, control of your tempers – back to you. Why? Because you are not toddlers.

The flip side of this? When we are outraged by their poor behaviours - they turn on us. They deliver the stupid/cliche "ItS JUsT A JoKe" or invalidate our valid request for them to behave like functional adults.

This was a great article and I actually thought the journo/author must have been an FDSer...

In primary school the teacher sat me next to the most disruptive and obnoxious boy in class so that my calmness and tranquility will rub on him. I had to move school because that boy terrorized me and disrupted me.

Society is fucked up because they think that all that is needed to calm down a man is a woman or should be at the expense of a woman.

They use women and girls as buffers for male aggression at the detriment of said women and girls.

Women have always been expected to be the "moral backbone" for the men in their lives. Think: Victorian wives having to be upstanding Christian women to keep their abusive alcoholic husbands in check.

Historically speaking, this has been used to control women. It makes her responsible for men's bad behavior. If a woman transgresses morally, she is doubly punished, not just for herself, but because her behavior is a reflection of the entire family/culture. Think: men committing acid attacks and "honor" killings against the women in their family as revenge for having a boyfriend or dressing "immodestly" or other small transgressions.

Meanwhile, men get away with literal murder because he isn't seen as morally responsible for his own behavior.
