i see it as very appropriate and empowering to give kids a woman’s last name. all my kids will have my last name and so will my husband.

There are some places that take the mother's surname. Not as many as the ones who take the father's, but let's not make it a joke that having your mother's surname is laughable. That makes it seem like you're saying women are less important in family history.
