I am currently 3 months behind (1275/month) on child support after losing my job. I notified the child support recovery unit the day I lost the job. I have been on several interviews, but in today’s world, the hiring process takes an asinine amount of time.
I currently owe $4000 to a woman that lives in a 700,000 house, and drives a fully loaded 2018 4Runner. She doesn’t work.
The Child Support Recovery Unit has issued a bank levy on my checking account (my only account) that will freeze my account on the 29th of this month. They are telling me they are taking 50% of my account, or the total amount owed, whichever is less.
I will literally be homeless once I am evicted from my meager apartment I currently live in...the apartment I had to move into after I was forced to sell my house, since I couldn’t afford it after the support order was put into place.
I’ve told my “case manager” all about my situation, and she has told me that she believes it is in my “best interest to contact a lawyer.” Yeah...because I have the money to pay a fucking lawyer...again...

I’m glad you asked. I live in Iowa, and I know things are different from state to state, so I can only attest to the laws in Iowa.
To answer your first question. Hard no. My case worker told me in no uncertain way that losing my job will have no effect on the money I am ordered to pay monthly. I shit you not, she flat out told me to ask family or possibly friends for money to pay the support order.
Here’s the crazy part... let’s say I’m employed and for some reason I have my pay reduced. 1. I have to prove that I have lost 50% of my monthly income, and have done so for three consecutive months. 2. I have to be able to prove that my pay will stay at the reduced level for the “foreseeable future,” meaning there doesn’t appear to be any reason my income will increase within the next three months. So, essentially, you have to be able to prove you lost 50% of your income over the span of 6 months.
It gets better. Let’s say I was employed, and met the criteria above... The Child Support Recovery Unit would initiate what’s called an “administrative audit.” Basically meaning they are going to seek out my employer, my bank, and any account I have to see whether I meet these requirements...
Here’s where it gets beyond INSANE... Let’s say I end up meeting ALL of their requirements listed above. That doesn’t mean that my support payment will be cut in half, or even cut by the percentage of the income I’ve lost. Oh no, they now basically cherry-pick a number they believe I am capable of paying. Example: I have a bachelors degree in finance and have 7 years experience in that field. By that metric, I should reasonably be able to pull in between 50k-80k annually. What they would likely do is enforce a support order based on the 50k I “should” be able to make.
How do I fight this? Well, it’s simple... I go talk to a lawyer. You know, the people that charge $250/hour for their time. I simply do not have $7 grand to pay a fucking lawyer.
I am a good father to my daughter. I have never cheated or bent the rules to get where I am. I have done everything society expects of a man in today’s world. I was forced to sell my house and my truck due to the support order. I am currently living in a two bedroom apartment, driving a 2006 GMC Canyon with 226k miles on it.
Today is the 20th. Best case scenario I get a job offer this week and accept the job. I will undoubtedly not be paid until well after the first of the month. My landlord is understanding, but after the 10th he has stated he will have to give me a “3 day notice to vacate.” Which, I completely understand.
The kicker of it all? Where am I supposed to take my daughter when it’s my weekend for “visitation?” Is she supposed to sleep in my truck? What is she supposed to eat that weekend?
Oh, yeah, I almost forgot, they’re also telling me that they are going to start the process of revoking my drivers license, passport, and any other professional licenses I may have/need. Because, who the fuck needs to be able to drive to job interviews?

This is 100% correct. States are reimbursed .60 on the dollar for each dollar they collect in child support.
They literally don’t even try to hide this fact anymore either. Look no further than how quickly they process the paperwork to initiate the support order. It literally took less than a month for me to be served paperwork, land my ass in court, and the support order was written. The month thereafter my first support payment was due.
I asked my “case manager” how I can get a modify my support payment and she said I’d need to submit a form and they take the form on a “first come first serve basis,” so naturally my next question was, “okay, so about how long can I expect that to take?” She says, “well I’m seeing a wait time of about three months before the paperwork even begins the process, and from there it just depends how intricate your case is.”
So basically, it could be 6-7 months before any kind of modification can take effect, meanwhile, I’m still racking up thousands in arrears.
The part that rubs the salt even deeper? Let’s say my income increases by 10% on an annual basis... I am required to notify them. Literally, all I have to do is call my case manager and tell her I’m making more money and the next month my payment will increase to reflect the increase in my income.
It truly is extortion in every sense of the word.
