Aronson, Alexander, and the author of this article all completely kowtow to feminism even while being attacked and abused by it. Why is gender differences in Stem such a conflicted issue when women make up 75% of Psychology Majors? That's one example of a question raised but not answered.

Don't tell r/sneerclub but I'm a huge fan of Slate Star Codex. I read Alexander's blog about this way back. His blog, Meditations on Moloch puts forth an alternative to Patriarchy theory that actually makes sense in a game theory sense.

Touching article, and it covers some good points and information, but the overall kowtowing to feminism was a bit hard to take.

The fact of the matter is that feminism is guilty at this point of oppressing men, white men, and white male nerds in particular. They always say it's just patriarchy, because there are ways in which traditional gender norms are still harming men, but what feminists never acknowledge is that they selectively reinforce these norms where it suits them, and treat cooperation with the Patriarchy (oppression of women) as an unconscious sin men commit, nearly from birth. They see men as guilty of oppression and privileged in all arenas by virtue of their gender, and no matter how many examples of this pattern you give them, they always fall back on the No True Scotsman fallacy of "those are just bad feminists, and they're an insignificant minority; they don't define feminism, feminism isn't a monolith." They object to generalized criticisms of feminism, and yet praise it in generalized terms all the time.

Part of the problem in the gender debate is that feminism has a halo around it, and it has become taboo to criticize. Any criticisms of feminism must be couched in terms of "areas of patriarchy that feminists have yet to fully address." You aren't allowed to say feminism is bad in some respects, only that feminism isn't good enough in some respects. This is classic apologetics in that it starts from the premise that feminism is good and seeks to counter any arguments to the contrary by reframing the identified complaint as a problem with something else, to which feminism is actually the solution. I dealt with these tactics regularly when I debated religious people as an atheist, and it's why arguments that feminism is a modern pseudo-religion hold a good deal of truck with me.

Feminists can't take the idea that they have a bias, and that said bias stems directly from their feminist education, not from patriarchy. They can't understand that feminism itself is a power structure in society at this point, and that it's impact is not entirely positive.

I've never really been able to articulate it well, but the way I've come to see things, I think that sexism is akin to an autoimmune illness plaguing humanity. For those of you not familiar with the concept of autoimmune illness, it refers to a category of illness in which the immune system attacks healthy tissue instead of attacking pathogenic invaders.

Individual men and women comprise this organism that we call "humanity". Anger is a name we give to feelings that direct us to protect ourselves and our loved ones from harm, but when we see members of the opposite sex as the threat, we live in a constant state of paranoia and never feel safe, and when we act out on feelings that the opposite sex is out to do us harm, we lash out at people who we have no reason to be angry at.

This was a VERY interesting article, thanks for sharing it.

One thing that struck me was how the wider meta-narrative of men as predators/abusers/rapists contributed to structural oppression.
