How do I / should I, respond to statistics where women are mentioned but the topic has nothing to do with gender?

I wish I knew. I get mad at people ignoring men in issues all the time. One of my pet peeves is hearing how many Native American women disappear or end up dead every year but I literally can’t find info or studies showing how many of the men end up with similar fates.

instead of men, just use protected groups who are not womxn. black people, latinx, trans, nonbinary, autistic, lol. but need to know the agenda of intersectional feminism, and why they are more oppressed than women

In general, the safety and wellbeing of women is seen as the highest priority in any social arrangement.

I am not entirely sure that this is unrelated to human evolution. So, this "Women and kids first" narrative may be recurring until the end of our days.

There is no doubt that philogyny characterizes all system-justifying rhetoric so it can definitely be said that this is a feature of most cultures.

These facts are important because they suggest that changing peoples perspectives is not something that we will be able to readily achieve in the course of a single conversation.

Having said all of this, it is probably a complete waste of time to try and set the record straight with those people.

It’s a way to add to the urgency of the issue. Highlighting female victimization is more likely to make people sympathetic to your cause

I’m not sure if calling this out is going to be very useful. The hyper visibility of woman’s suffering is an emotional manipulation strategy, the women (and their children) are highlighted because it is going to pull on your heart strings in a way that highlighting just adult men just won’t.

We usually define a tragedy based on a loss that wasn’t supposed to happen. It is the perception that the event isn’t supposed to happen that makes it a tragic loss. We have spent the last, I dunno, 9,000 years, internalizing that it is the men who are the soldiers and the protectors, it is their purpose to lay down their lives for the women, children, elderly, all of society really. With that said, people after all this time, still perceive men as the ones who are supposed to die. When men die, it is a loss, but not a tragedy because men are supposed to die, it is only tragic when women and children die, because they were supposed to be entitled to a longer life, when we men, are not.

So when you call out a person highlighting the loss of women, you are not really calling out misandry per se, you are calling out the use their attempts to use your heart strings to feel worse about the tragedy than you would have.

I agree that it sucks that men who are still considered not fully entitled to a long life, and that is an association needs to be critically discussed, but I wouldn’t recommend doing it reactively but highjacking another person’s topic about a tragedy; that will introduce it mixed signals to the discussion. I’d recommend making it it’s own topic.
