At the risk of sounding negative, I think the shift within these movements toward a generic anti-war stance is actually very bad for the initial cause these protests sought to defend. Let's be clear: the issue of compulsory military service for young men is a gender and societal issue, that is, a question of the place and value we grant men as individuals. Compulsory military service is a reality in many countries, both in Europe and the rest of the world. In Finland, for example, young men who refuse to comply risk either prison sentences or fines. In Thailand, every year young men must submit to a lottery to determine who will be sent into the army, and so on. Even in the USA, the selective service, which many wrongly portray as inconsequential, is very restrictive. Failure to register can create legal problems and prevent young people from accessing scholarships, obtaining a driver's license, and other restrictions.

Therefore, the war in Ukraine was certainly a catalyst for the return of these measures of military service, conscription, etc., but they are not simply a consequence of conflict; they are the result of policies and a social culture that discriminates against young men who, despite the social progress we have witnessed in recent years, are still considered expendable/disposable assets by society in the event of conflict or a risky situation. By transforming protest movements against military service into anti-war marches, the social issue of gender affecting men is being erased and replaced by a more general geopolitical and ethical issue concerning certain conflicts.

This is all to the German government's advantage, allowing it to gradually reinstate its military service and mandatory conscription without fear of strong opposition, as young people will have been distracted by other things.

And I do mean distracted, because let's be clear, this kind of shift in message from a protest movement doesn't happen by chance. Initially, I think this movement was sincere and spontaneous, and that organizations with their own agendas and political priorities saw an opportunity to cannibalize and appropriate it, to the detriment of the original message.

It must be clear that the anti-war movement largely focuses on the situation in the Middle East, which is a rallying cry for many left-wing and far-left, sometimes radical, organizations. These organizations are not necessarily comfortable opposing measures that exclusively target men because this contradicts their dominant left-wing narrative, which posits that we live in a patriarchal system where only women are discriminated against while men are the oppressors. Therefore, I think that, ideologically, these organizations felt a vital need to suppress movements that risked highlighting gender issues in which men would be perceived as victims.

Furthermore, with the rebranding as an anti-war movement, there is a risk of things going in the opposite direction on gender issues, since even recently the UN published a report claiming that women are the primary victims of the conflict in Ukraine. This is a serious distortion of reality and ignores the fact that almost all military and civilian casualties are men. Therefore, not only are the issues related to male-only military service likely to disappear from the forefront (much to the delight of the German government), but we could also see the emergence of discourses following feminist rhetoric that portray women as the sole victims of armed conflicts.

Also, if one's goal is really to abolish the draft completely (which unfortunately is a very naive idea in itself), then the best strategy would be to first make it gender-neutral, so that women as well would be pushed to participate en masse in the fight for its abolition.

Women are generally not going to protest that it's only men getting conscripted. After all, the government could go "ok, women get conscripted as well then. Equality"
