There is a movement among anarchists and other left-wing elements to abolish prisons. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prison_abolition_movement I don't necessarily agree with all the arguments it puts forth. They claim that private prisons are driving mass incarceration. I think that private prisons are a consequence of mass incarceration rather than a cause. https://www.prisonpolicy.org/reports/pie2019.html http://lawcomic.net/guide/?p=170. That being said, it is something that we should get behind. Most prisoners are male. https://www.bop.gov/about/statistics/statistics_inmate_gender.jsp Men get longer prison sentences than women for the same crime. https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=2144002. So the benefits of abolishing prison would accrue mostly to men. Most importantly, there is no evidence that prison actually reduces crime. So you can't argue that men benefit from it by virtue of being the victims of crimes. So I advocate for extending the model of restorative justice to all violations of the law. All the money that is now tied up in the prison system could be used for something else, like housing for the homeless or making our transit infrastructure more environmentally friendly i.e. less dependent on cars. That isn't even touching on all the lost productivity and tax revenue from incarcerating people in their prime working years.
