Literally the most ridiculous show I've ever watched. I work in infectious disease and those holistic doctors are quacks. Don't accept insurance? Red flag number 1. Using ultrasound to move the lyme bacteria to your blood and urine. Red flag 2. It's absurd and all of these people had phsycosomatic disorders rather than real things. I've had lymes more times than I can count and I'm just dandy after a round of abx and I actually had REAL symptoms. When people come into our office with a long list including "brain fog" and fatigue we usually roll our eyes and most of them are looking to go on disability. Yeah right! Get your ass to work like the rest of us tired, brain fogged folk.

The dry Sonoran desert is rife with fungus & mold spores, including coccidioidomycosis. All you have to do is inhale. There would be no way to decontaminate THE DESERT or an OPEN HOMESTEAD. As a medical professional, this show is very difficult to watch. I am truly an advocate of functional & alternative medicine, but a lot of what they show is hokum. I think they all need to try some good weed...

Among the skeptics and charlatans, there was one great doctor in this series who knew Pilar's symptoms were psychosomatic, but instead of trying to convince her of that, or bilking her of all her (husband's) money, he said that it was his job to initiate the placebo effect in her. And that is exactly what he did, telling her he expects to see significant improvement over the next several months. He had percentages and a timeline and everything. That is when her big turn around happened.

PS. It did not improve her personality. Bitch is a stone-cold narcissist. ... ...to be fair, her husband is a fucking patsy.

Just saw Star getting an ionic foot bath, which is straight up snake oil. The stuff that forms in the bath comes from the multimetal electrode that’s also in the bath. Apply just a touch of current to that electrode and it essentially rusts like crazy, clouding the water. Straight up BS. Run one of those without anybody’s feet in it, and you’ll see the same schmutz form in the water.

I agree. I think if their husbands weren't supporting them they'd get jobs and probably live normal lives out of necessity. My mom did this to a degree while I was growing up. She had legitament medical problems but certainly not anything that would justify almost 20 years of a sedentary lifestyle. I feel the worst for pillars husband. Dude was just trying to make it work and she was squeezing him going to chiropractors and talking to magicians on the phone. His crusty old dad with his yogurt called it.

My rant:

Someone beat me to it and made a thread about this show.

First of all, the producers understand these people are mentally ill. It reminds me a lot of the vice program on targeted individuals. I dont think a single person on the program has a legitimate health problem, in the way they are describing it.

Alternative medicine can be a good thing but in this world, there is a con specifically designed for every chump out there. For every symptom these people believe they have, someone out there "practicing alternative medicine" is more than willing to validate their concern... for a price. And often that isn't cheap. As someone mentioned previously all that shit is a cash business.

When they interview the actual physicians practicing the quackery I notice they all have this look in their eyes like "wow, I am really getting away with this." Its like they actually cant believe the long game has gone this far and this is the level it has reached. They are charlatans, one and all lower than pond scum who deserve street executions but this is America and this is capitalism pure and simple. They figured out a way to make 6 figures off tricking dumbasses so more power to them... at least in our fucked up country. I personally believe they are morally bankrupt but bad behavior is rewarded with cash in America.

Then we have the wide eyed enablers who really know their family member is completely full to the brim with bullshit, but are so complacent they have conditioned themselves into encouraging the bad behaviour their partner or family member is exhibiting. The families that really got me were two: the couple with the lady who has electricity allergies and the man child with a made up disorder appropriately named "ME" who is so "sick" he conveniently lays in bed all day every day but not a single doctor will come visit.

The couple with the electricity allergy: her husband is hilarious to me because he always looks at his wife like "what the fuck are you doing, you KNOW this is made up. We both know at this point. To me, there is no saving that marriage. How would it continue exactly ? If she gets to a point of mental stability again, what then? "Hey hun, remember that time you were allergic to electricity for five years? Man, that was so much fun you running around waving stand lamps in our bedroom window, shutting off electrical breakers randomly and destroying every friendship we built together?"

I could honestly go on.

But I think I got it out.

These people are extremely sick. I know Bekah and jamison (the one in bed for years). If you knew how much those of us with these illneses suffer, and that your misconceptions ads to our suffering and deaths you would be so ashamed of yourself. Science doesn't understand every illness that exists. These film makers did a horrible job of representing the science. CFS/ME is a totally established illness with lots of tests that show the abnormalities. They don't know the cause of it because it's so underfunded. If this was funded the way AIDS was we would have an answer and there wouldn't be so many of us with horrific symptoms, unable to get out of bed, care for ourselves and left to die without enough government care or family support. CIRS (mould illness) is also becoming more established with clear tests and treatment guidelines. Because mainstream medicine has done so little for us we continue to fight for our lives with treatments that help many in the community like IV ozone. They don't show in that episode that it helped Bekah and that it is one example of something that helps the majority of people with lyme and related illnesses. Wouldn't you do whatever it takes to get better with the money you have if you were sick everyday and could not take care of yourself or work?

I think that, whatever is wrong with them, they shoulnd be the ones in charge of gambling away someone elses money. you go to a clinic, they tell u its X out of pocket money without any insurances or data behind it, and then they think its fair to emotionally blackmail their family into anything. no, people in that state shoulnt make those decisions. imagine they go into point of no return debt, and tomorrow science figures out what they have plus treatment... but the treatments very expensive.... well if they hadnt spent all that money. u can spin the argument any way u want it, but truth is, its not fair to ask someone else to throw their money into a thing u dont know how likely it is going to help.

I also love how they rule out mental issues immediately, like somehow its a lesser disease or sickness. it isnt, and by refusing to even exploring the possibility they are doing themselves even more harm than good. theres no harm in seeing mental care, I consider myself a healthy person but I would love to have a couple consultations if I could afford them, just like I would with my heart, lungs, w/e. its like they re trying to sell really hard they have a real disease. well, mental ilnesses are a real thing, a very real disease with very real symptoms. im not saying they have it or dont, im just saying they dont look into it, they check everything else but that.

None of them mention seeing Pshychiatrists or counsellors regularly do they? I think most of them have probably received a mental health diognosis but either they don't accept it at all or because they feel such physical symptoms they can't believe their mind alone can manifest such things. It fucking can (one time I got 10 mouth ulcers at the same time caused by stress and probably other symptoms if i looked for them) They are using their 'sickness' as an excuse to back away from parts of their life that make them uncomfortable (even if it's good things like exciting work opportunities or bad like a breakup). Sick has become their identity and they're scared what they'll be without it. They should send then all to a MH facility for 6 months and see what happens. This show frustrated the hell out of me! Felt sorry for all their friends and family.

If you know people that believe they are mold sensitive, get them to go and hang out in any pine forest. The goodness pines release into the air gives mold little chance of survival, testing of pine forest air shows lower pathogen levels than operating theater standards.

Most of the people in Afflicted just need to eat lots of root vegetables/leafy greens/fruit/herbs, mostly roots/tubers though, and staying away of big cities isn't a bad idea if feeling off in anyway. Of course physical exercise, something you enjoy doing is vital & often can be social, important for mental health.

Being a person who understands and is sensitive to anxiety, it seems to be the common thread among the individuals represented on the Netflix series Afflicted. Many of these problems appear to be compounded with the stress of worry, anxiety, which is known to be debilitating. Many of these anxieties appear to be heightened when a physical diagnosis is suggested, and it seems that many of the people suffering from extreme anxiety and who are unable to cure their physical symptoms with physical treatments, could benefit from dealing with the mental trauma associated with the anxieties.

Furthermore, many of these people who feel like they are making progress to separate themselves from the physical causes of their suggested ailments, seem to appear better as their anxiety decreases because they feel like they are making a difference. I would suggest that the physical manifestations have a strong correlation to severe anxiety.

My question is this, are physical illnesses and diseases onset due to extreme anxiety, or is it onset due to the illness?

It seems to me that physical conditions seem to deteriorate when anxiety reaches an point of overflow, or when our brains can no longer manage the physical stress associated with life.

Many people search for the meaning as to why something is what it is. I suggest that the meaning of what happens is found in the purpose we assign it. To state more clearly, meaning is found in what we assign it to be. Meaning is not what something is, but how it is understood by a person. For example, advanced calculus is of very little meaning to most people, unless you are some sort of engineer or scientist. What calculus is does not seem to suggest meaning, rather, what it means to an individual is what a person allows it to be for them, the assignment of meaning.

If people see themselves as sick, would they not then be sick? Do our minds have the ability to manifest symptoms we believe that we have? I think it is an interesting topic to explore.

We define the meaning of our lives. Life is not so much about finding the meaning of it, rather, it is to understand how we let ourselves define what is meaningful to us. If you have never read Man's Search for Meaning by Victor Frankel, I would suggest a consideration of the text of a brave and brilliant survivor of the death camps of WWII from Dr. Frankel (a psychologists perspective).

Actually I have been reading elsewhere about these illness and can assure both Lyme disease and M.E are not mental illnesses and been known by the scientific community Lyme disease are cause by tick bites and is confirmed months away with rashes produced which are exclusive to lyme disease and also M.E are caused by viral illnesses such as glandular fever, mononucleosis and dengue fever.. also been researching about the patients in these docs and they all passed the mental health test provided by top psychiatrist so saying mental illness in these case in primary is a bit ignorant however on the flip side people having ignorant views like you and often ignored by some health professionals is going to make some of the patience more prone to secondary mental illness like feeling depresst or isolated, you ahould really research about these illness before making an ignorant comment like that.
