Speaking as an attorney from Texas, it is not uncommon for people to say "we don't even have alimony in Texas, why are you worried about getting married?" - and while there are some States where this is technically true, they leave out the fact that we DO have spousal support and in Texas, this can be $5000 per month or 20% of the paying spouse’s average monthly gross income, whichever is lower.

Do NOT believe people who tell you that in your State or jurisdiction there is no such thing as alimony as there is a very good chance that while what they are saying is technically true - there is likely some variation of alimony that is codified differently and has different requirements. Taking marital property in law school was easily the most valuable course I took in school in letting me see through the bullshit of marriage.
