Funny thing is... hunger games MC was written for a man. She has no defining female characteristics. That and a female hero is generally a joke. It’s rarely well written. Exceptions are some wild manga stuff involving cyborgs or giving women super powers... aka Wonder Woman.
But if it was written properly with it being a male lead... the blonde kid would have been a hot blonde girl and they would have had sex and been a couple. Moment you make a female lead it destroys any connection

Well the Katniss character actually does have one definitively "female" characteristic: she strings along two guys, flip-flops between them in a very "moody" manner, can't decide which of them (if either/any) that she wants; and IIRC this is made explicit late in the third book where the two guys actually talk about this characteristic between themselves and note that they expect in the end she will choose whichever guy serves HER interests "best" (a sort of "hypergamy" if you will).
As to the "manly" or "survivalist" aspects of the character -- and to be fair to the author, she DID emphasize that: 1) the character was an EXTREME exception; that 2) her initial hunting, shooting, food skills were developed over many many years (i.e. they weren't some instant "Mary Sue" superpower thing); that 3) the skills were learned via her father's VERY explicit & extensive instruction during her childhood (arguably extending even after his death, using his notebook in terms of plants); and furthermore 4) that it was "honed/polished" under the tutelage of another male (initially a teenage boy a few years older than her), who served as a sort of substitute-father/older-brother to her, subsequently hunted with her as a "team" and became a potential "love" interest. EDIT: Plus 5) it's also in context of a massively de-populated dystopian future ecosystem (i.e. massively lower HUMAN population surrounded by significant "wild" lands where virtually no one hunts; which translates to plentiful game animals who are largely unaccustomed to human hunting).
Also, the author DOES note that many other females in the same "community" actually DID more or less resort to prostitution in exchange for food; and (again IIRC) that in fact the main character (Katniss) even posits at one point that had it NOT been for the fact that her father HAD so thoroughly instructed her; AND the fact that she was still pre-puberty {I think age 12?} when he died that she too might have ended up resorting to that.
Point is, if girls/women are thinking that they'll just "pick up a bow" and "become like Katniss"... then they either ONLY saw the movies* (i.e. didn't read the books at all); or they only read the books very superficially, not comprehending what was actually written.
* EDIT: And in many ways -- per example as other have noted the problems with the bow/arrow hand/face in the pic -- the movies (as nearly ALL movie "adaptations" of books are) were rather shitty/adulterated versions of the books.
And yes, of course this also applies to most boys/men these days. (Anyone who ACTUALLY knows how to hunt, forage, etc; does NOT harbor ANY delusions about HAVING to survive based on it.)

But in this case you're wrong -- I'm presuming you (like so many) only ever saw the films and didn't bother to read the actual books.
It isn't so much a matter of "explaining" as it is that the character's skill sets are entirely plausible in the context given; there's noting "surprising" or magical about the Katniss character's skills, nothing that either a female (in that context and having been provided with that instruction) -- or indeed even a young boy -- would not be fully capable of doing... and moreover the character (in the books) is anything BUT an implausibly perfect "Mary Sue" (she's a VERY flawed** character that in fact does go through a decent "growth" arc).
* It certainly applies to the entirety (or close enough to it) of the comic-book "superhero" genre -- the very concept of "superpowers" is inane by definition.
** "Mary Sue" by definition has no character flaws.

This has nothing to do with plausibility, either. I mean, sure Luke could have killed plenty of womp rats or whatever, but it's still the lamest part of the movie.
Not even saying that this character in particular is a Mary Sue on that basis; as I said, I'm not interested in this story and how the hell would I know? I'm just saying that's not an effective way to show that she isn't one.
Short version: demonstrate the struggle, not the plausibility. See what I mean?

Not so sure about "easily," but I am pretty confident that I could learn how to forage reasonably effectively if necessary in a few days if I had access to reference materials and in a few weeks if I had to do everything from scratch. To be sure I would mainly use traps as they are much more effective than actual hunting (which is why traps are banned in most jurisdictions).

Thats my hope! and what I have regularly attempted to encourage on this site. Its also a way to avoid panic and resulting violence, and to maintain control when things go chaotic.
Which is why I spent a couple years planting concepts on political forums.. I'm naturally libertarian, but will side with the lesser evil.
In my opinion the second amendment must be protected so that if/when things go insane that those who are wiser, saw it coming, prepared, etc. can defend their homes and families and act like dampening rods in a nuclear power plant.
If its Zombie Mob Armies and no moderation due to weapons being lacking, it could go all the way to the bottom... ie mass Cannibalism.
If common folk can act as the last ditch and back up the National Guard from their homes, it becomes a suppression of violence and restabilizing influence exercise.
Basically those going berserk cant create absolute anarchy.

The system is actually designed to fall back all the way to local areas defending themselves, just like after Rome and then the dark ages and Feudalism.

Are you claiming that this *is* Venezuela? If so, then it's much cleaner than I expected. I also doubted that people still had enough easy access to oil to be able to casually drive around in nice cars, but I admit that I haven't been following the crisis there at all and that it's possible that the worst is passed.

Most of them can't do anything else. How many cleaning and serving jobs will be available? They'll be protests to legalize it. They've already legalized new birth baby murder so we'll see more of that.

I only know one woman that would be like the girl with the bow. The rest without a man to take care of them would either curl up and die or would revert to being prostitutes.
The one I know that is kind of a bad ass who Really doesn't need a man is already working on moving off the grid as they say. She raises chickens and turkeys and can do anything guy related like working with power tools.
