In my State, school district budgets have ballooned 12x since the 1970s. The outcomes have sharply worsened. Budgets are routinely wasted on more bureaucracy and SJ / PC programs that serve no educational purpose.

Public schools in affluent neighborhoods outperform schools elsewhere by ridiculously high margins, and the difference is the additional funding contributed AND controlled by PTAs. This results in spending on activities and consumables that DIRECTLY benefit teachers and students.

My kid attends a top 2% school where ALL the extra curriculars are Science and Math, paid for with PTA funds and direct out of pocket donations from parents.

Schools ARE NOT UNDERFUNDED, their budgets are wasted and mal-administered. Want to raise pay for teachers? Cut the useless bureaucratic fat.

One of the biggest myths: teachers are poorly paid.

Total fucking bullshit. When you add up salary, benefits, pension and take into account they only work 8 months a year, they are more than generously paid. Plus unless a teacher literally kills a student, they will never be fired. It's 100% job security with the ability to retire at 50.

I wouldn't mind this if teachers actually had an IQ above 80. But most of them don't.

I'm a male teacher and wholeheartedly support them protesting. I worked in the Australian public school system for quite a few years before entering the private education system. It's not as bad in oz but we're not that far off. Similar situations. Most of my male teacher friends have left public school for private because that's where the money is although these days it's not as better as it use to be...

Public schools in many countries are underfunded for the times we are in. Governments should care more about the education system. It's what creates a strong nation. Yet education is not treated as important. Public school sector is on life support. Tertiary education is in the toilet. Degrees are worth shit these days from many universities/colleges because it's become big business to exploit the young.

Teachers workload has increased exponentially. It's not easy believe you me. I give this example to my non teacher more corporate friends.

Imagine you work in a company. You're the head of 4 to 7 departments each department has 25-35 people. You're directly responsible for the project planning, work allocation and work evaluation of each department. You have to maintain their work quality and assessment. A very significant portion of your work is done out of office hours on unpaid, unrecognised work time. Your budget is overseen by not one but many bosses who all often have conflicting/differing opinions. You often cough up your own money to give your department what they need to succeed because of the 'passing the buck' mentality your bosses appear to have which means you never get what you ask for on a timely manner.

Those departments? They're classes. Those employees? They're Students. The lesson prep is project planning. The work allocation is teaching. The work evaluation is assessments/homework etc. The useless bosses are the multiple administrative staff who most of the time are chilling in the staff room drinking coffee or browsing Facebook.

Most schools today are way too top-heavy. Filled with administrators who do very little productivity wise. They're salaries often double those of teachers if not more. Senior administrators, top 3/4 per school I have respect for they earn their pay in most situations.

In the corporate world a person with those type of responsibilities is on high six figure incomes. Teachers rarely see that unless they move into administrative positions very late in their career. It's that simple.

People who are not teachers just don't understand or care generally. Western society seems to have instilled in most people a callous disrespect of teachers and their profession. I've always been passionate about education. A solid education system will create bright minds that will have a butterfly effect on the country they are in.

You honestly could fire half the admin in most schools today and productivity wouldn't be hurt. It just means the admin left would actually have to do their damn jobs and work as hard as the teachers do.
