The pay gap is both real and a myth. Let me explain.
What most people think/assume is that they are talking about men making more money than women for the same job - this is rare and almost never happens anymore. Most of the sources/reports I see readily admit that.
What they are talking about is that on the whole, men make more money than woman, which is absolutely true. But that is due to a variety of factors, with gender/sex being of little importance.
I might get some flak for this, but I fully believe that men and women should be paid the same for the same job. That's what equality is all about. But I don't know how you close the wage gap when the majority of women take jobs with little earning potential.

They do get paid the same for the same job. Otherwise companies would just hire women. The pay gap is because of a few things. Men work more hours, men work in higher paid careers and men might just be asking for pay rises more.

You should also add that tech and engineering used to be frowned up by women, so there is a lot less in them, and even as the #s even out, they still have #s less years of experience.
But typical women nature is to want to see everything equal (or in their favor) NOW. They rarely understand that stuff like this may take a generation or two.

Yeah but they have gone full nuclear so there really is no point in honing the edges of the argument.
Women work less hours.
Women work easier jobs.
Women often take 5-20 years out of the workforce. (a staggering amount don't even do it to raise children. They just can because "vagina".)
Women work safer and more comfortable jobs in cities in offices.
Women work jobs that require little or no experience.
Women "work jobs" where they are simply paid to be nice to look at for how they were born.
That is the supposed pay gap. Women live easy lives on the back of men and complain about it.

As an employer myself, there are many circumstances which cause me to pay employees different wages for the same job: seniority, loyalty, those willing to work overtime. Imagine if I would pay a new hire the same as someone who has been loyal to me for twenty years, even though they do the job in exactly the same way. I'd lose my loyal workers pretty quickly.

Nobody is arguing that both should make the same wage. But if I work 40 hours and she works 20 and we get paid the same then there is the issue. Her time isn't worth more than mine, although, I'm sure that argument will come up soon (biological clock and once they learn that they can weaponize their handicap of "the wall).

Or fewer hours. Women typically work 8-10 hours less than the average man in the US (closer to 15 hours in some other countries). If you compare that to a standard work week and start doing some division, it's easy to see how a good chunk of it is based on earnings rather than wage rate.
