It reminds me alot of the early seasons of the walking dead . Rick made the right choices and got hated for it. God I hate what that show became.

I think everyone was an asshole in that movie. Sandra Bullock even considered letting the girl that wasn't hers keep an eye out so she could steer the boat.

I wouldn't recommend the movie because it's a shit movie.

The "worst" white person is John Malkovich as the smart one (as always) who is that black and white thinking, "don't let that person in the house" type, which throughout movie history is always the right decision. He may have been a drunken asshole, but he was right.

Now a big staple of survivor/horror genre movies (zombies, etc) is that you have these black and white, vs shades of gray type decisions going on, and in really good movies you see different characters make decisions on this that advance the plot and allow character development. That's fine.

However where this movie fails is the second part of the survival/horror genre, which it to set the rules of the environment so when the "survivors" break them there are consequences.

Like zombie movies. Are zombies fast or slow? Does their bite infect or kill you. Do you become one of them? Do you have to only do headshots to kill them?

Like that, you establish rules of the survival world, so you have something to work with.

This movie doesn't establish rules, and what rules it pretends to establish, doesn't happen. I don't need to the entire world explained, but you should learn it with the characters. The characters magically know everything from the beginning.

In any zombie movie there's that period of discovery where you find out that you can shoot them all day long, but without a head shot they don't die, you find out they have some sort of infection they transmit through biting, etc.

In this movie you open your eyes you're dead. There's no way survivors could ever learn, much less transmit, this information to other people. What happens is random. Sometimes you start killing yourself instantly, except when you start killing someone else, and sometimes you drive around in cars perfectly sane and hunt people. At no point does anyone tell anyone anything. So how does everyone already know what to do on Day 0?

You can't look outside or monsters will "infect" you with suicide or whatever, but a simple blindfold will stop what appears to be a physical monster that can knock over trees. They can make minions that will force you to look at them and kill yourself seconds later. Why some are minions and some aren't? No idea.

But if you're indoors? No problem. However if you look out a window they get you, but you can walk around outside all you want under a blanket and talk to each other just fine face to face as sun beams through the holes. Sometimes you can partially see. So can I hide under a fishing net? which is mostly air? Some nylons like a bank robber? How much seeing is "too much" seeing? What about a mirror? Cameras? Periscope? Shadows on a wall? Upside down No idea. Everyone gets together at the beginning clearly knowing how to navigate this world based on no way they can have that knowledge. They can't be bothered to show it on film.

And the time jumping everyone plays out? Retarded. The fact that we start off with her going down a river with two kids, means that when we jump back to the beginning, we know there's no possible way for her or children to get hurt, so who gives a fuck what happens or what she does? Oh she's scared of something? Well she's immortal until we catch up to the time line, so we're just treading water. There's no stakes in the movie. It should have been told linearly like, you know, survival horror should be.

Survival genre movies have that required element of "survival". So if I know you're going to be completely ok at the start of the movie, can I get a refund on my ticket? You need to see them running out of, and hunting for supplies. Food, clean water, medicine, the power suddenly going out.

Also, if you don't own a boat or fuck around in rivers and streams as a hobby, you probably don't know their boat trip is impossible. You will get stuck on the sides every single time. That's what currents on windy rivers do, push to the outside. Even on small streams. There is a zero probability of success taking a boat to just walking next to a river you can use. It took me out of the river every time when as a blind person it's impossible to row backwards and point to where you hope to go, say, center of channel, also it's a river so why not just drift since that's all you're doing anyway. You can barely not screw this up when you can see, because you're looking at where you've been, yet she expertly manages to navigate a fast moving river with ease. If you've ever taken a canoe on a moving river most of your time is just trying to not run aground and course correct.

Also the whole "bird box" thing is stupid, it has no meaning in the movie and has nothing to do with anything. Supposedly birds chirp when the "monsters" are near, which means you'd think they'd use this as an early warning system to put a blind fold on. Which also means the monsters or whatever isn't always around. The monsters or force have physical capabilities to affect the world, which means they are location specific. Not only that but the monsters know about the birds and try to kill them. The second you look outside regardless of where monsters are or not, you're dead apparently, so, are the monsters omnipresent? So the birds have no value.

So she carts around some parakeets in a box, for no purpose, because they're never really put to use in any tactical way that would necessitate carrying them around and naming the film after them. They serve to purpose to anything except in a couple plot unrelated scenes.

It would make sense if you heard the birds chirp and quickly close your eyes, then wait until the birds stop in order to do something requiring vision.

The movie on its own is terribly put together in plot structure, editing, scene to scene matters, etc. Very very stupid.

Huhhh. I personally liked the premise of the film and didn’t have any real issues with the acting.

I mean it wasn’t bad to me, wasn’t amazing or anything but I certainly wouldn’t express it as being feminazi ish or politically corrected to fuck.

Sandra Bullock was pretty good tbh, the way she handled the kids was pretty good too.

Wasn’t much that particularly stood out but again, I like the overall premise.

There was some pretty dumb plot choices but those were just dumb plot choices nothing really more, even the dumb shit wasn’t THAT bad.

I’d give it a 6-6.5/10 ... wish it was a bit scarier though, what I’ve heard about the book is dope tho

I guess the demons were too dim to get through the chimney, under the crack in door, or under the blankets. The movie makers certainly checked off the diversity boxes: latina cop, old lady, young millennial, gay asian, black hero, younger man/older woman romance, a fat girl, Indian lady doctor, and of course the tough chick heroine. It was mildly entertaining but there are better ways to spend your time.

Didn't really pay any attention to the under tones, Plus I've already forgotton most of it, If you had to be anyone in that film, Surely you opt to be one of the psychos, Wouldn't you?

Ahh yeah, a demon thing wasn't it, There was a demon thing in it, I think?
