The whole “trained killer” thing is way overblown. I spent almost a decade in some pretty respectable Infantry units. Outside of a very small subset of units, there aren’t many well rounded “killers”. Infantry standards are not as rigorous as are often supposed. Unit PT is mostly maintenance. Bodyweight exercise and endurance based cardio are the norm. Maximal strength? Not so much. The vast majority of guys aren’t terribly strong. Many fall well short of college athletes.

As far as technical training. Almost all the focus goes towards weapon use; specifically the M4 Carbine. Even then, most guys aren’t great shots. Very few learn how to use a pistol well. Many will learn how to effectively use machine guns and other heavier support weapons. Those have little to no application outside the narrow confines of armed combat.

Hand to hand combat? Give me a break! Army combatives is a joke. Its very watered down and little time is soent training it. Knife combatives training. Non-existent for the most part.

I have learned more about martial arts through boxing & jujitsu in the few years since I left service, than I ever did while serving. Same with pistol shooting.

There are no doubt a handful of incredibly talented operators in the military. That said, they make up a tiny fraction of soldiers. The myth of the “trained killer” is mostly perpetuated by former soldiers with outsized egos.
