Generally speaking, and of course there are exceptions to every rule, men and women are incompatible with being friends. If you have a "friend" of the opposite sex, who is remotely still sexually compatible, and your relationship is anything more than polite acquaintances, one of you will eventually become attracted to the other and begin pursuit.
It's human nature.
When a dude is sharing details of his life with a woman, and they're chatting each other up, it gets confusing. This is especially true if she's the kind that sends mixed signals in the form of lewd jokes, memes, and/or comments. Throw in that whole thing where she implies certain things, allowing you to be the one making a connection, so that she has a backup escape plan and excuse to get offended, and you leave the guy frustrated as to the nature of their relationship.
I've seen some younger dudes do this, and I've tried to warn them. I've tried to lend the experience of my mistakes in life, but it never works, because until they're ready to see the truth on their own free will, they will not accept it.
It gets pretty annoying to see some idiot get strung along, telling everyone, "oh, she's my best friend" when you can clearly tell he has a secret thing for her, and is trying his best to win her over. They won't admit it to themselves, so obviously they can't admit it to anyone else. It's blatantly obvious what's going on, yet they insist men and women are perfectly capable of being friends and that's all there is, and fuck you for saying anything to the contrary.
Until they get butthurt when five years of fruitless pursuit ends and they get salty. That's one of those glorious "I told you so" moments.
I think a lot of it just comes down to being truthful in the use of language. The left is pretty bad about redefining and twisting around the meaning of words to fit their agenda, and it shows in our modern culture by way of people picking up that habit.
Instead, if we truly used the word "friend" in it's true sense, then I'd agree that men and women are indeed capable of being friends. The problem is, the people who are saying that, more often than not, have other motives behind the curtains. They're using that description as a way to justify their behavior.
So in that sense, no, it's not compatible and it will not last. It will only end one of two ways -either you fuck, or you end up salty and mad at each other. That magic in-between-area of a lasting friendship, because you value each other's company, their insights, their skills, humor, and personality does not truly exist in this scenario. The only thing that exists is some BP simp trying to change everything about himself to emulate her interests or behaviors, hoping to get a whiff, while swearing to his friends, "Oh, no, I really do enjoy that show called Supernatural! I'm not just saying that because my oneitis obsession likes it, I swear!" until he finally gets the hint and turns into "Fuck her man, she's a dumb bitch anyway and I hate that stupid show".
A friendship is a mutually beneficial relationship between two people, of a non-sexual nature, in which you enjoy hanging out with someone, while being there as a support structure in times of need, and holding their well being in high regard. That must be a two way street of mutual respect and admiration.
Show me a "friendship" between a guy and a woman, where it is reciprocal, and firm enough in the non-sexual way that both could be in their own relationships, and their partners are 100% okay with what they have going on. Show me one where the dude could be stranded, and she'd willingly drive out to pick him up and give him a ride, solely because they're friends. Show me one where she would come help him paint his shed, because they're buddies.
That doesn't exist, outside of maybe gay dudes and their drama circle, or between people who are vastly different in age and aren't sexually compatible. Anyone who says otherwise is a damned fool or is being willfully ignorant.
