Buy a guitar. You get a used one from the classified ads for about $50(US) and learn everything you need on Youtube. That's how I started. Now, 12 years later, I have 8 guitars and I'm awesome ;)

I read comics and manga, but lately I found amateur novels. Entire books for free, granted they're not as good as your top of the shelf best seller. However they're much... different to you typical books. For example at the moment I read a novel about an MMORPG gamer who's a legendary hero in the game.

You could get a 10 gallon Aquarium with equipment off Craigslist for 20$. Skip the goldfish, get yourself some nice red cherry shrimp and watch em breed. It's like having an ant farm but it's 100x more fun. Becareful though, this is a gateway drug^:)

Guitar is cheap, if not free, once you've acquired one.

I bought one for $200 and get tablature for $5 a month via a patreon.

Worth it. Feels good supporting young talent.

Reading is great. You learn so much even from fictional works, and it helps immensely with writing.

If you don't mind reading on a computer or other device (and a big plus if you have an e-reader, very cheap nowadays) you can go to Project Gutenberg to browse and read (legally) over 54,000 free ebooks. That's like three public libraries.

If you can scrap together ~$50 you can get a decent e-reader and literally be set for a lifetime of reading, let alone with cheap/free titles regularly available from Amazon or other online outlets.

I like to draw - pencil and Indian ink. I even made myself a drawing desk that tilts for the corner of my living room.

Airbrushing is also good - a decent beginner setup with a basic little compressor and a double action airbrush can be found online for not to much cash. Amazing results can be achieved fairly easily so it's a lot of fun to learn...

And reading of course, lots of reading. Mmmmm booooks.

Look up Hash House Harriers. Groups are all over the place and its a guaranteed afternoon of slightly intoxicated exercise usually for around 5 bucks per run to pay for the organization. I warn you though, they're usually a bunch of very weird people there.

software programming, plenty of free/cheap online courses and youtube videos to teach you the basics and most software is free and the amount of content can keep you engaged for years ( or if that is not your cup of tea can learn about linux or building websites)

Amazon has a whole SHITLOAD of "Classic" literature -- basically formatted from (public domain) Gutenberg Project texts -- that are available to buy at the prices of $0.00 (yes that's ZERO cost); to some that have a bit nicer formatting, etc, but are maybe $1 to $3 (which is dirt cheap, especially since you don't have to GO anywhere {not even to a local library or corner bookstore} to purchase anything, and there is also no shipping charge).

In all seriousness, there are more GOOD books that are available for FREE than there is time to read them -- books you can learn solid things from, as well as just enjoy the stories, characters, etc.

* the B/W "e-ink" ones are the BEST in my opinion for reading (long charge-life battery, etc), but the color Kindle "Fire" tablets works too and do more (battery charge just doesn't last as long because LED uses more power than e-ink**)

* Hint (applicable to all units): put it in "Airplane Mode" whenever you're doing anything that is "offline" activity -- really extends the battery charge -- as of course does reducing the brightness of the backlight.

Consumer/prosumer "combo" packs of the Li-Ion based Battery tools -- small circular saw, drills etc -- are generally not THAT expensive.* And the whole collection will often fit in -- even sometimes come with -- a duffle-bag style carry/storage bag.

Add on a couple of fold-able sawhorse things and toss a 2 ft x 4 ft sheet of 3/4 ply (which can be set on or clamped to or even temporarily screwed-down) onto the sawhorses ... and you can have a pretty compact "workshop" (easily fit into trunk or backseat of a car, or in even a small apartment closet) that also won't really cost you all that much, and will be capable of doing probably 75% to 90% of the kinds of projects you can with a dedicated workshop.

Is it the SAME as having a full-blown dedicated workshop? No, of course it isn't... but it's much cheaper and a LOT more portable (and none of what you buy in that form will be wasted, since nearly all of those tools -- including the sawhorses, etc -- are JUST as useful in any full-sized dedicated workshop).

* Watch for "sales" deals of such "combo" packs around Father's day and Christmas (and possibly even BETTER "clearance" deals in the weeks following those holidays).

Amateur radio / Electronics - You can breadboard an arduino for about £5 and you learn loads, 'lucky bag' components gets you a lot for little $. Eventually you find yourself building little gizmos and looking into 3d printing, pretty soon - I'm working on an arduino powered drinks dispenser/mixer just for fun.
