I have to admit I have trouble getting over exs too, but only the most recent one. Aka, as much as I missed Stephanie in 2015, I dont think about Stephanie at all when Jessica and I broke up in 2018. Im single again, so you'd think my mind would go back to any of my previous exs from the last 15 years. But you ALWAYS get stuck on the last one.

Either find a new girl to replace the thoughts, or find a new purpose to replace the thoughts. Its a lot easier to find a new girl than a true genuine purpose. But I recommend you try and find a purpose.

I'll give you an example. I was really messed up about a girl once. For MONTHS. Then one day I had an opportunity come up with a friend to work on project on the side after work that was intense, cool, and high paying. My mind went into overdrive to figure that shit out. I went from moping around thinking about my gf every free moment, to being pissed if there was a line at the gas station because I fucking had somewhere to be. I was losing time! fuuuuuck. I didn't think about the exgf again.

At first, you do not love her. You love the image of her in your head instead (not the real girl but the idolized image of her which has nothing to do with the reality). You live in the dreams about her, but the reality is that she is ordinary, mean and type of AWALT - she is your ex for a reason. You do not understand her behaviour because the girl in your dreams never behaves like this (you are trying to find out the reasons in your own behaviour and character instead of blaming her image in your head). Maybe she is very beautiful, but this set of characteristics can be reduced to neoteny - the way how the nature urges to replicate itself. We, the men, find some patterns attractive (but for example, mosquitos have other patterns they find attractive in humans)

The second problem is that your brain produces some chemical substances during your dreams about her and you must always dream about her to get a new dose of these substances. You must go through the abstinence process like an alkocholic. The more you dream the more you get these substances and the deeper is your abstinence thereafter (and the harder it is to stop the dreaming). In the end, the deeds must follow the dreams (because now the dreams alone can not produce enough chemical substances to satisfy the brain). And here comes the 'sudden' contradiction between the dreams and the reality, hence the severe abstinence. Now you can go back and stay on your dreams with permanent dissatisfaction or you can stop the misuse and recover gradually. You are a drug addict, you must cut the production of these substances in your head! Bear in mind that it takes time for the brain to find another way to compensate the lack of these substances. You must switch onto other activities (sporting, hiking, working etc.) so that you do not notice/feel the abstinence so hardly.

Once alkocholic, always alkocholic. Now you know your weakness. Try to avoid such dreams about other women in the future.

TL;DR: Your mind plays tricks on you. Once you understand this, then it is simple to go further with your life and interests.

Try to bear in mind you got her when she was younger. I have an ex I dated when she was 18 who just got married at 35; that dude isn't getting anything near what I got. I also have an ex from ten years ago who is about to get married: I had her at like 23, 24. If you were early on in the game, you probably got the best of what she had to offer in terms of attitude and low-responsibility dating. Let these guys figure out mortgage payments with them is the way I see it. Not my problem, we spent all of our time fucking and driving around going on adventures. I had my fun.
