That is a very simplistic visual from the 1950's of how your typical open rear differential works. Only rear wheel drive vehicles have this anymore. Examples being Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro, Dodge Challenger. Also all pickup trucks.

A friction clutch limited slip axle works in a similar manner, but allowing full power to both wheels in a straight line. Ford Traction-Lok, Chevrolet Posi-Traction, Chrysler Sure-Grip being examples of factory limited slip differentials.

Had a Ke70 with a welded diff once. A lot of jerking and wheel hopping during any turns under about 40 kmh, driving around carparks was the worst! lol
