Some definitely aren't. In the 80's or so, people in the US started sending clothes to Africa to help them. It absolutely destroyed their textile industry.

Currently, there shoe industry is having difficulties due to some US shoe seller doing a buy 1 donate 1 offer, where for every pair you buy, they donate one to people in Africa.

However, some, such as donating to find a cure for something, or to help subsidize medicare care, can be absolutely ethical.

The best form of charity towards poor countries would be to help them get proper institutions then sound market economies.

Free, fair, equal form a trilemma where you can have 2 of the 3 but not all three. Yet axiomatic human value is that we fundamentally value all 3 as pillars of morality. The solution is to have a balance of all 3, instead of maxing out on any 2. To convince yourself of this, try picking any two and imagining a hell hole country that has only those two to the max but none of the third.

That's ethical because most of the people in 3rd world countries suffer from corruption so they make very little progress. But most of these organisations are helping only women so their goal isn't really to help them in making progress.

It's like messing with a natural balance in nature. Ever since we started interfering in these shithole countries their populationbhas skyrocketed, but they don't have the resources to take car eof themselves or the intelligence to plan long term to make things work.

So they consume and consume and need more, while being completely dependant on us. They already died in large numbers due to famine, war and disease. All we've done is help them create more people to suffer.

Nice topic, this is not much discussed normally, as i live in third world, Brazil this is something i had seen a lot.

Philantropy as i see is ethical, but can be inneficient, because you should give things for free to people, they become lazy.

There was a service 'technical schools' in the 80's which is a programa involving gov and private business (SENAI - SESI) system where young people could learn a profession early, as a poor young boy, at 16 i studied machining mechanic, and had my first contact with work ethics and technical work, was not the profession i take later but most of my coleagues got their jobs with that training. I as payed a small stipend as aprentice at that time, but today i see their are charging money to the courses, so i think is harder to people who have nothing to give their first step.In the other spectrum, there is a thing called 'bolsa familia' , family grant, which is a unification of many assistentialist programs, and by 2013 covered Em 2013, 13,9 million of families, composed by a average of 3,6 people each, half of the people live in the same geographic area of the country. 42,2 % of thoses families are from single mothers, and 37,6 families with two parents.

Before the creation of the program , the earlier grants are criticized as 'alms' and lately the same politician unified those 'alms programs' in his own brand and used as a tool to keep himself afloat, as his rivals could extinct the transfer of the free money...As corrupt as he is landed in jail last year, but our clown justice let him free later, etc.

More to the point, this model is created to keep people poor and dependent, and their idealizators, in power and seen as saints,no matter what they do, this is what 'money transfer' does it. Once a textile business vicunha trained some women to do job in industry, but if they begin to work and receive a salary, they would lose the benefit from the gov grant, so the program failed.

Once implemented, no politician can risk to cease the program, as means millions of votes, more even with frauds, like 1,4 million of cheaters already detected (dead people getting money, people without CPF (something close to american social security number), multiple CPFs, people who got the benefit because they gave money to some political parties, and people who by the law should never receive (like people who works in the gov).

As the economist Muhamad Yunus once said as he visited my country and had seen how it works:

"Giving money to the poor is not a solution to poverty," he says. "It is a way of masking the problem."

As i see, to prepare people to take care of themselves is ethical, like education, job training , etc, but to give them things for free, is unethical, and is the way the keep poor people forever poor. Only people who should get something free are those physically or mentally incapable, to provide by themselves.

Of course, with corona, the corona voucher, a man can get R$ 600,00 but a single mother can receive R$ 1.200, so think about that if you was born with male genitalia, and love to pay taxes...

I like how these billionaires make their money by screwing everyone and everything they can to amass such fortune. Then, donate it to the poor out of the goodness of their hearts.

Bill Gates basically sued tons of individuals and small business out of business to create a monopoly and here he is now acting like a saint.

If one day, China dumps free food and causes all the farmers in the US to close up shop, do you think that's ethical? If one day China dumps free to cheap goods that destroys the US manufacturing base, do you think that's ethical? That's what the US and USAID have been doing to poor countries. Destroying their basic industry.

It’s ethical.

But I like the Biblical approach of leaving the gleanings behind (Leviticus 23:22):

”And when ye reap the harvest of your land, thou shalt not make clean riddance of the corners of thy field when thou reapest, neither shalt thou gather any gleaning of thy harvest: thou shalt leave them unto the poor, and to the stranger: I am the LORD your God.”

The Bible makes it clear that you are supposed to leave the gleanings there and they’re supposed to make the effort to go get them.

In other words, I’ll help you, but help yourself as well!

The idea, to me, speaks that certain classes of people (especially in those days) needed help and rightly so: The Elderly, Widows, & Children.

A man, a real man, is strong enough and kind enough to help those in need.

Most of the world is filled with men who can barely take care of themselves.

They’re so busy buying silly vanities and wasting their money that they can barely take care of themselves much less a family and you can forget about charity...

But the idea remains: Some people will need help but they must make an effort to help themselves and in the Biblical sense, do some kind of work to eat.

If someone doesn’t want to help themselves, then that’s a different kind of problem...
