OP, don't worry. Watch what they do, ignore what they say. It's not only OK to call them females, it's exctually important to do so, to knock the retarded idea of being a princess out of their vacuum chamber. Underachievers are not princesses, they're just generic females, nothing more, nothing less.

There is a social phenomenon both in Japan and South Korea similar to this 'women' and 'female' word usage.

Men are called either 男性/남성(Japanese/Korean), or 男/남자, and women are called either 女性/여성 or 女/여자.

In both case, 男性/남성 and 女性/여성 are more 'respected' or 'deference' word than 男/남자, 女/여자. I don't know about difference in English nuance between Men/Male and women/female, but in Japanese and Korean, this difference in nuance is quite obvious and explicit. The latter is something like 'casual' word at best.

And guess what? Almost EVERY SINGLE TIME when media refer men, they are called as 男/남자, while females are ALWAYS(literally always) called as 女性/여성.

General public's 'convention' and reaction to this is somewhat different in Japan and South Korea. In Japan, a few men recognize this and call themselves always 男性, while call females always 女, as some kind of mocking toward media/feminists. And many general public Japanese' word usage in this context is not like the media.

Meanwhile, Koreans are, as expected, exactly follow the media 'convention'. Almost every Korean follows that media 'convention' in word usage. Personally, I ALWAYS call men as '남성'(difference), while ALWAYS call female as '여자'(casual), but almost every Koreans are exactly opposite.

One more 'interesting'(or irritating) thing: When you translate Japanese into Korean (or vice versa) by Google translator, in many times(but not always) 男性/남성 is translated as 남자/男(i.e. google translates the 'difference' word as 'casual' word when it comes to men), while in the case of females this phenomenon is exactly reversed(i.e. they translates 'casual' word into 'difference' word when it comes to females).

I've asked around about this before and received what I think is a satisfying answer. It's a square-to-rectangle thing. All squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares. Likewise all women are female, but not all females are women, because female includes non-human female animals. So when you call them females, it's like calling them an animal. That made enough sense to me.

Not sure I care that much, but at least it's logical.

Yes its been a thing for a while now. I didnt use the term female much before but after finding out ppl have started taking offense to it (even ppl i personally know, not just an internet/reddit/twitter meme thing) ive started using it almost exclusively to refer to them

I call them females because referring to them as 'women' would have gotten me looked at sideways by my RDC's during bootcamp.

The habit of saying the word sank in rather quickly and strongly over those 2 months.
