STORY TIME! My last job, I kept getting hit on. Because I made the mistake of complimenting someone I shouldn't have.

Roughly my age, a little younger. The crash already happened, but she had not quite hit the wall yet. But she was in the process of being flung from the CC and was milliseconds away from impact. 5 kids with her husband, and fucking the manager (and likely the asst manager as well) on the side. I didn't know any of it until after, because I generally don't interact with co-workers on anything other than a professional level.

She came in to visit someone on one of her nights off, and she looked alright. The dress she chose and the makeup, she looked pretty decent. Small talk, dropped a self deprecating joke. So I said "Naw, you look good. You'll be fine. Go have fun with your friends." I didn't say it to be a simp, I said it because I'm a fat ugly piece of shit and I know how that kind of insecurity eats at the soul. I just wanted to do someone a solid, ya know? I figured a simple, small -scale neutral compliment like that would be fine. Obv, this came back to bite me in the ass.

Next thing I know, she starts coming after me, little by little over the entire next month. Suggestive text messages. Flirting. Thank fuck no nudes. That's when I started finding out how desperate she was. BPD with suicidal tendencies. The kids. The husband she was bored of. The manager she was fucking. I started having war flashbacks to a previous ex and just... my soul shuddered. Big goddamn unscalable mountains of LOL-FUCKING-NOPE.

Had to put up with this harassment for months. Couldn't go to the boss because she's fucking him, and he's an even fatter uglier piece of shit than me, so no way he's going to say or do anything that endangers the pity-pussy slung his way. Plus, didn't want to potentially inspire jealousy in him. Couldn't go over his head because I tried that once before in a similar situation with another job and it got me fired.

I knew better than to stand my ground. I knew better than to speak up. I just did my level best to ignore it. I figured, it's like training a dog. You reinforce good behavior positively and bad behavior negatively. Even the dumbest dogs will start to pick up on action and consequences, right? So I would talk normally. When the flirty shit started, I would ignore her or give the simplest, smallest word count neutral answers I could. Worked a bit, but didn't completely eliminate the bad behavior. And the hypocrisy she would display was staggering. I remember her having a convo with another girl about a creepy fuck (and he absolutely WAS a creepy predatory fuck) that worked with us for like two weeks before getting fired for harassing customers. They were complaining about it when she smiled and giggled and drug me into it by saying "OP can harass me any day he wants tho." So I just shot back with a warm smile "Well good for me then I'm not the creepy type that harasses people like that." She didn't get it. Thought I was playing hard to get.

This went on for months until I finally quit over being expected to work extra for basically free. She had the gall to say "you better come back and see me" on my last day. And tried to give me a hug. Just.... no.

If anything, this experience reinforced my mentality that words have immeasurable power and influence. The tiniest well-intentioned compliment can and will make life unbearable. Think twice, act once, speak not at all.
