Just had a thought - isn't it amazing coincidence that this movie, which is considered one of the best movies of all time, number 1 in IMDB, etc, has virtualy zero female characters in it?

There is literally not a single named female character in the film. You don’t even get Andy Dufresnes wife’s name.

Otherwise there were also two landlady’s when Red and Brooks were released and the angry woman at the Food Way when Brooks forgets to double bag her groceries. (She’s literally the only actress with lines if you ignore Rita Hayworth from archival footage)

You would be hard pressed to find another film that fails the Bechdel Test worse.

Stand By Me is another one. The only woman in the movie is Gordy's mom and she hardly says anything in the movie.

Goat movie right there. I was fairly poor growing up in the late 80’s but we got a hand me down VCR and Stand By Me. I was right at the same age so it hit perfect.

It was one of the first movies I owned, recorded off HBO by hand. I was about the same age as the kids and when the movie came out it was kind of my last childhood summer, just like it was in the movie.

Same here. I was the same as those boys when it came out. I read "The Body" from the anthology "Different Seasons" a few months before the movie was announced. It was my favorite story in the anthology.

Das Boot? On the one hand its a little annoying to have to follow the subtitles but on the other hand the whole film is a lesson in leadership.

Lawrence of Arabia - Long and it takes a lot of license with events compared with the reality Lawrence told in Seven Pillars of Wisdom but it is amazing. I would love to watch it in 70mm projection at the cinema one day.

Ice Station Zebra - Not one of the greatest films ever but there is nothing to do with women in it and its wonderfully shot and just a hell of a thriller.

I also like The Hunt for Red October - minimal women in it. It's one of the best thrillers ever made. I loved all of Tom Clancy's books as a lad.

Again hardly a "great" or anything but Master & Commander: The Far Side of the world. Based on Patrick O'Brians Aubrey and Maturin series. I thought it was excellent.
