I think it’s because marriage is seen as the union of opposites or two halves of a whole which creates a more godly creature. The husband and wife are now seen as one entity. God is whole already, since everything comes from God, meaning good and evil, strength and weakness, all-knowing and un-knowing, all-seeing and blindness, ever-present and non-existent.
