If you buy a $500k house, you're doing something wrong. I've owned 5 houses in my lifetime, and the purchase price of all of them combined doesn't break the $500k mark. 4 of the 5 were under $100k.

My wife has never wanted, let alone expected, an engagement ring and we spend less than €2k on our wedding and wedding rings combined. It's not that we don't have the money, we would just never consider wasting it on something as trivial as 'precious' metals, 'precious' stones and a wedding ceremony that nobody really wanted to attend anyway.
