You gotta hop off the STEM high horse (coming from a guy who loves it/does very well nationally in tests). STEM isn't the be-all and end-all of success and it's very reductive to say they're not smart enough to work in STEM.

You can make bank in arts/media. But it seems there's only two ways for it to be possible:
The easy way: Nepotism is a bit overwhelming in the field. Moreso than anywhere else, since screwing up or just being mediocre doesn't matter too much. So if you're related to some business owner, or have a higher up in family then you're in. Also the same with friends, but to a lesser extent. This is how many shitty artists get design jobs, and you see their stuff featured on /r/crappydesign or /r/keming.
The hard way: You have to be mind-blowingly good, and people would struggle to not notice what you're doing. Not everyone has that talent or that amount of focus. In a way this may cross that "autism" boundary typically associated with STEM, since many artists at this level tend to be in their own little world.
If you're middle of the road and tend to keep to yourself, I'll agree that the arts is a shitty field to get into. You need connections to get anywhere, and even if you do great icons/logos/UIs, it's not going to be at a rate that beats some 14 year old from Asia doing business by slightly modifying existing designs and spamming it on Fiver.
Some would argue for freelancing, but that seems to be marketing/sales skills first and any art to it is secondary. If you can't put on the song and dance to draw the crowd and hawk whatever wares, you're still SOL. (This is why many esteemed artists in the historical sense never saw much recognition and were borderline penniless until after they died. They did their thing, but it wasn't themselves that got their art noticed.)
If I had known it was this bad before getting my bachelor's, I'd likely went with something like welding, and expanded the skill in such a trade to cross-over with the hobby I wanted to make into a job.
It's not that you're entirely wrong. It's just that you have to be in "the club" to have access to making that money. The degree itself isn't it.

Why don't you learn to weld now? Basic welding isn't hard to learn. There's a lot of high end technical stuff that you need to know to make serious money as a welder, but I doubt that you would need that level of expertise just to stick bits of metal together in an artistic shape.

Some people are better at art/graphic design than STEM subjects. Also even if they are competent with STEM subjects not everyone is interested in working those careers and feel they’re better suited for the thing they’re best at.
I’m an artist in NYC and it’s crazy how discriminatory art fields are toward white men. I’m at the top of my class with a 3.8 GPA and pretty solid portfolio and I’ve lost studio residencies to ethnic female students who paint like toddlers and barely ever show up to the studio.
I totally get this dudes frustration, but outside of the “art school” and residency world most employers don’t give a fuck about diversity quotas or whatever and just want to hire competent people. Yeah there’s the occasional blowjob position internship but that’s kinda just life.
Making it in the art world is rough. It’s like 95% failure and 110% hustle. If you have no talent there’s simply just no room for you cause everyone doing this work is talented as hell. Just gotta embrace it and keep going and keep bettering your skills or choose a different pursuit.
Also if this dude can only find bars with $12 drinks he must be on the upper east side or something. My local spot has $2 cans and $5 can and shot happy hour. I pay $750 for a tiny ass bedroom but that’s NY. My groceries cost pretty much the same back home and with people moving all the time it’s pretty easy to cop free furniture or generally just random shit you might need. It’s really not that hard to live cheap in NYC if you’re smart with your money and a bit of a slick opportunist.

Depends on where you are. Lots of artists and designers in NYC and LA make fuck you money. But I agree with you that 99.9% of undergrad fine arts majors are probably wasting their time and don’t have the hustle and drive for this type of work.
That being said, you don’t have to work in the world of you degree per se. there’s lots of valuable knowledge and maturing via “the college experience “ if it’s not spent partying 24/7 or goofing off playing video games / not focusing on your work/career. Having a 4 year degree says to employers “ok this person commited to the mastery of a subject for 4 years.. looks like They got a working brain.”
College degrees are just green lights for opportunities these days. Unless you’re somehow exceptionally talented without one you kinda need it just to get ahead.

If you're not socially incompetent you should be in management in 1-2 years tops.
But, tons of programmers complain about how youngsters take their jobs. You need to get into management and stay there.
Honestly STEM is far superior to any other office job, including business (although business is also pretty good, but the best paying business jobs, financial analysis among others, have 80 hr weeks).
I think trades is the best career path though, very fair hours, good pay, strong demand, etc...

The 'not autistic' jab is a little much but I think his overall point was that not everybody is cut out for STEM. Speaking personally, I don't disparage those jobs at all. I appreciate the fuck out of the guys who went into tech or engineering that are pushing technology forward and making life better. But there's no way in fuckin' hell I'd be able to do it. I despise anything more complex than basic math. I think that's what he meant. My hat's off to the STEM guys.
Even so, though, if he doesn't have the right brain for STEM, he could have gone in to the trades and saved himself all of the trouble and debt.
If you're a young man you have 4 options: STEM, Law, Trades, or Military.
And if you choose to serve your country, get an education while enlisted or use your GI Bill afterwards.
I don't know what guys in the arts are expecting, unless you're Jack Kirby or Bill Finger level talented, you're not getting anywhere. You'll lose to diversity quotas 100% of the time.

I have a friend who owns a graphic design company and he makes good money. He is not a graphic designer and has no artistic ability himself. He did his degree 20+ years ago in something unrelated. He got into the business because he owned a print business. He employs designers for not much money and pitches his print customers for design work. Just an example of how you can make money in an art business if you can hustle even if you have no art skills yourself.
