A lot of it starts with failed parenting, too. So many young people these days, men and women alike, are being raised without the mechanisms to be functioning adults. They are being fucked up from the beginning.
Things like participation trophies and just being given whatever they want, without ever having consequences for their actions as children, results in growing into adults that lack empathy and the understanding of reality.
So this behavior starts out on the wrong foot, and then when they don't get their way and have another tantrum -instead of having a parent that just caves in and gives them a toy to make them stop crying, or pushes the other kid out of the sandbox so they stop crying, they now have the government to do it for them.
Now we're on a terrible cycle to where these generations that were raised this way, are raising their own children the very same way. Gone are the days of integrity and respect for your fellow human being. Now everything is a blood orgy of narcissism and doing whatever you can to fuck each other over as quickly and as hard as possible, just because you can. Because it feels good to do it
And then when that momentary rush of dopamine fades, and you don't feel good any longer, they are confused as to why they don't. But instead of introspection and reflecting on why they might feel empty inside, they just rush straight into more shitty behavior, they immediately do something else to fuck somebody, to get another hit of those sweet ass chemicals in their brains and get back to "normal".
And when it all comes crashing down, when they've pushed every single person away from them, when they've burned every possible bridge in their lives, when they've destroyed every olive branch that has been extended... when nobody will take them in out of the cold any longer, they become an emotional wreck. They turn into the patron saint of dumpster fires.
This is when they start abusing nerve pills/anti-depressants, later going on to harder drugs and alcohol. This is when they start looking like they've always just had a crying breakdown, when the wrinkles around their eyes are far past their physical age. This is when they get the tremors in their hands and when their brain is so fucked up they can't even form coherent thoughts or sentences any longer.
Once they get to this point in life, when nobody is there to scoop up the pieces any longer, they usually end up either in adult care facilities, on the streets, or dead.
You can only run amok for so many years. You can only run around on that high, enjoying the limitless power of wielding the sword of the state for so long. You can only get petty revenge and "get back" at people so many times, before your entire life gets fucked up.
Most of the time, it's women who do this to the father of their children, all of their relationships after him, and eventually their own fucking children, who end up at the end of a rope and still ask, "Where are all of the good men?"
On the one hand, I would hate to be in his position. On the other, that man is a God-send for whatever child would have otherwise been raised by a single mother.
