I think the release of the 1098 in 07 was really the dividing line on Ducati reliability. Everything after that has been generally really good, on par with the rest of the industry for the most part. No more 3,000mi valve service intervals, flaking rockers, and exploding voltage regulators.
Out of the 6 Ducati bikes I've had, only one (2016 Multistrada) has been anything less than turnkey reliable. They Hypers have got some known issues though, and the DVT Multi may not fair too well when we look back on it in the future (there's some known weak points in the wiring harness that cause some problems with the keyless ignition and power up, and fuel gauge sensor is pretty much guaranteed to go). Other than that though, for the most part they are miles ahead of where they were 20 years ago.
I've got a V4 Aprilia now, first foray into the other italian. Time will tell how it goes, but seems good so far.
Bikes aren't a cheap hobby, but they are still a bargain compared to sports cars.
You can nearly throw a sportbike in the dumpster and buy another one for the cost of a carbon ceramic brake job and set of tires for some nice but not even exotic sports cars.
