"Marital Bliss" is a myth, the only reason marriages in our parents/grandparents generation lasted is because they had no other choice, culture at the time would not permit them to divorce. So they had to just learn to COPE with being around each other.

Societal conditioning is to blame as well. Usually from women who tell men that they should settle down because they want to help the next women out. Then you have men who are miserable and want you to be in the same company as him.

Nonetheless, strong-willed men with enough logical sense won't be burdened or swayed by that. The men who are afraid of dying alone will be.

Because marriage is a good thing. Really, it is. When done right. The man works to provide for the family and the woman provides a stable home. Everyone benefits and it allows for a strong foundation and prosperity. It’s worked that way since the beginning of time. Man and wife were dedicated to each other for life.

But recently women decided “fuck all that”.

Men haven’t quite come to the realization that women are now openly and proudly conniving and selfish and willing to destroy the lives of the man and also their children pretty much on a whim.

I fell for it. I’m not proud but I’ll admit it. But clearly, men are learning and as evidenced by the MGTOW movement and also by a lot of recent articles noting men’s unwillingness to commit and ruin their chances at happiness.

Women get the house because they take half his pension, cash it out and add it to her share of the home equity (which he probably paid for as well).

Love make you stupid. That's pretty much everything there is to it.

Also, men with values tend to think that the people they love share the same values as them. After all, they love them, right? They couldn't if they were SO different and were jerks ok with abusing others. So they expect their women to be as faithful and "great" post-marriage as they intend to be themselves. As such, in their head, it's a win-win situation. When it comes to reality, though...

Needless to say, it doesn't happen. But that's pretty much it. Men are naïve and too good for their own good. And love, true love, as opposed to what female like to call "love", make them blind. They don't see the problems or think that they will be solved with time and that this happiness will know no end.

Of course culture doesn't help too, but even without it, love would create an illusion strong enough for most men to get sucked in.

I can understand the appeal in the older days or when not taking statistics seriously. It would seem nice to have a relationship in which you life together support eachother and care for eachother, and if you can make it mean more by involving the goverment/church then fine. However every guy on here knows that the odds of it working are very bad, and the odds of you getting screwed very high. Not only by divorce but also by you wife turning into a fat land whale who does nothing are very high with included dead bedroom ect.

Now why people still marry, remember still a large part of the population is religious. So marriage is a contract infront of god therefore people just marry since its part of what they are supposed to do (also some cant get laid before marriage can you immagine how desprate they are?). Second its the that would not happen to me falacy, basically alot of people think they are in the 40% of marriage that last (ofcourse the question is wether its a happy marriage). And third, man in love a in general not rational as man who arent in love, same goes for man who are not in love and dont chase pussy have better odds of being rational then men who chase pussy. Anyway when a man is in love he ignores all the bad signs and focusses on all the good, so a girl might have cheated in a previous relationship (red flag) oh but he was a bad guy she cant be bad, she has moodswings often (red flag) oh but that happens only so often she is so great, you get the picture right? So they run in blind and naked and after the loves fades, or is destroyed and they return to a more rational version they realize wtf have i been doing.

And yes media has alot to do with this, every romantic subplot ends with marriage ect, however now that you have taken the red pill this does not infect you anymore, then still is it a MGTOWs job to help people become MGTOW?

Marriage has always been a drain on men's resources and happiness. In the past though men who got married were entitled to some modest privileges to compensate for the burden of responsibilities he undertook. Traditionally, children "belonged" to the husband. If a marriage fell apart, then the man was the one who both got custody and also had to pay for the children. Additionally, at least a portion of his wife's property became "his" to manage also, again, for the sake of raising the children. The role of the father was also respected. Wives also had a complimentary set of rights and responsibilities.

Today, the overwhelming majority of the privileges men were granted to compensate for the burden of responsibilities have disappeared or have been handed over to the wife. The responsibilities however have stayed or been increased. The case is the opposite for women, the rights they enjoyed before have remained, while the responsibilities that society made them carry before have almost entirely disappeared.

Like most decisions made in life the root is fear. With regards to marriage it is probably fear of being alone, fear of being without an heir, fear of not being seen as a real man, and fear of the unknown.

Almost nobody these days lives a life not somehow driven by fear. It takes true courage and relentless vigilance to do otherwise.

I mean, I am engaged, and intend at some point to get married. My situation is a little different from most in that our finances are already intermingled (we make about the same amount of money but I am just entering my career, and she supported me while in school). We don't intend to have children, we will both work. So as far as financial risks--a breakup would be very messy on that end anyways. Either of us could theoretically empty our accounts and walk away tomorrow. But until that happens we are effectively splitting costs and living with a higher standard of living than we would be able to do otherwise. We intend to get married because we want to be husband and wife. We've been together for around six years, live together etc., and so we want the title. I'd rather be able to call her my wife, because even without the paperwork that's what she is.

I will say that marriage definitely isn't the same thing it was for my parent's generation. For us it's not a must, but it is something we've decided on balance we want to do. In some ways it's more important to her because she's closer with her family, but it is something we both want. I'm not saying this is a rational decision, because the justifications for me are emotional. And yeah, I don't anticipate a messy divorce. I trust her, or trust that even when things fall apart we'll be able to come to a semi-reasonable resolution. Having worked inside a courtroom I've seen that amicable divorces do happen, even when there is money involved. It's normally kids that are the problem.
