I get that this is sad, but I do think it's a little overboard for a crush. If this were a marriage proposal for a long term girlfriend, it'd be much sadder since all the time and energy spent on the project would be born of adoration for someone who's supposed to love him back.

But if it's just some random girl he's been eyeing, he has no particular reason to think his love will be reciprocated. And having spent all this time on someone you might not know that well does seem a bit obsessive.
