I like the movie but I always wonder how long would he have survived if he didn't find that bus.

The whole movie he's practically high on the idea of independence from other people, all he wanted was to "live off the land" but in the end he just camped in a creation of other people/society, eating rice left by someone else. Why abandon the Datsun but embrace that bus?
