Working a job only to pay for food and rent. It's not natural. People are stressed and miserable. Their lives are pointless. Society degrades further each day.

We belong in the woods foraging for food and building our own shelters like all the other animals have done for millions of years, but that is not possible anymore.

The only way out is to leave Earth. Manifest destiny.

[–]Mgtaoteching19 points20 points21 points 7 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I've been fantasizing a lot about "living in the woods" lifestyle for sometime now, after having woken up to how things are in this society. However, for me, that lifestyle would not support my personal development in the way I do now with the current job I have. I would ultimately regress to struggle to survive and have minimal comforts. Not to mention not having health care would be necessary in that life because of the ridiculous expense.

My solution in looking forward is to be cognizant of this fantasy, and dive into it a little at a time (vacations, retreats, long weekend camping adventures, minimalism, simplicity) and get out of the rat race while somewhat tolerating it at the same time. When I get out, then living a minimal and simple lifestyle will be second nature but with the benefits of continuing to live a somewhat modern lifestyle.

There is a documentary about Russian Fur Trappers called Happy People: A Year in the Taiga and that sort of lifestyle was extremely appealing. At least watching it on TV. I would probably buckle as soon as the mosquitoes hit if I didn't die of exposure first haha.

[–]toerrisbadsyntax0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If the mosquitoes don't drive you insane... The blackflies should finish off that job quite nicely

[–]squidracer 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I lived in the country for years. Without electricity it'll get shitty pretty quick

[–]celticlord88 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I wouldn't mind dropping off the grid permanently. living in the woods wouldn't be an issue if there weren't the elements to deal with. cold, storms, etc can make it very difficult. plus there's the predators. I admire our ancestors for being able to do it. but then again, they died by 70.

[–]SpecJoeMagic18 points19 points20 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I enjoy some modern conveniences. The problem is that we’ve gone way too far with most of it.

Now there are 30 different kinds of deodorant that all do basically the same thing and millions of dollars a year are spent on marketing to convince people that certain brands are better and worth the extra $2.

A lot of work is superfluous, especially with modern technology. We still have this mentality that people need to spend at least 40 hours per week at work when much of that time is wasted by people loafing and doing just enough work to get by and not get fired.

We have excesses in modern society like never before and people are running like crazy on an endless hamster wheel trying to keep up and making themselves miserable in the process. The key to happiness is often much simpler and actually attainable.

Of course, the single greatest driver of excess production is women. Blue pill men working extra hard to please them with lavish gifts. Just imagine the stuff that we could eliminate without this mentality and it would probably lead to more life satisfaction for more people.

[–]ParalyticPoison1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Completely agree with your sentiment. Like you said, my biggest issue with the 40 hour week is a large majority of current jobs don't require that much time to get the required task accomplished. I just hope that companies get their heads out of their asses once most of the Baby Boomer bosses are eating dirt, and start making work hours payed as long as the job was accomplished and not just if the person was THERE the whole shift. For now though, I am leaving the rat race completely, freelancing and side jobs are my new method, minimalism and entrepreneurship is the quickest way to "freedom" in this modern world, imo.

[–]squidracer 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The worst part is that you have to work 35+ hours a week just to get healthcare. Like wtf!?

[–]Sir_manalot2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Just because our bodies want this lifestyle, doesn't mean it is better.

Take a caged lion at a zoo. He wants out because he isn't suppose to be in the cage.

One day, he breaks out and is excited to be free.

In a week is starving to death and longs for the comfort of the cage again.

So he goes back and gets shot for he had to attack people for food in order to survive.

TLDR: The grass is always greener.

What are you smoking? Who in their right mind would live like cowboys again, not even cowboys do

[–]Teddy_Rhett1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]Blind_sypher881 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I dont think we need to go back to living in huts out in the wilderness but we're definitely missing out on us time. Seems the only time people really get together now is to drink rather then just hanging out, and if you do hang out everyones fucking around on their electronics.

[–]squidracer 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Idk, depends dude. I've worked jobs that i actually loved going to. Delivered pizza in college. Worked for a state park (that was by far the best).

I think it's mostly office jobs that are the most depressing. I tried it, lasted half a year before i started going crazy

[–]richbeezy22 points23 points24 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Glad I work from home LOL!

[–]harmonic_blast 3 points4 points5 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

What do you do?

[–]richbeezy1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I’m a project manager & analyst for a large bank. I do go downtown twice a month for meetings etc, but I usually look forward to it after working from home two weeks straight.

My life right now. Don't get me wrong, I live a luxurious life. But it's empty. I need to escape it.

[–]peopleofthesky2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Then do it.

[–]ForNowICanSee 4 points5 points6 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

In the process. These things take time.

[–]TheMuslimMGTOW2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Indeed. It took Andy 19 years to break out of his prison in Shawshank but he still achieved his dream.

[–]TGWWHOW[S] 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

what about going to other places? you know? travel somewhere and learn from that experience, I always do that when I feel life is pointless, even if it just going to a swamp or going to some barn.

[–]ForNowICanSee 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yep, I'm on it. Just need to put a few pieces into place then I will be doing just that.
