I don't watch comic book movies, so maybe I am wrong, but I thought Thor was loosely inspired by the Norse god Thor. I know those movies have other Norse gods like Loki and Odin as well, it seems like he is a god

It's inspired by the myth in the original stories. However, In the movies, they are certainly not gods. They are regular aliens with hi-tech stuff which looks like magic for earth people. Even Thor clarify that they don't have magic it's just tech which is more advanced than anything on earth. Thor without hammer is just a tough dude. We will see how tough really is without the hammer in Thor 3. And Loki basically had one of the infinity stone which granted him supernatural powers. On top of that, he is not even an asguardian because their father Odin took a child from the enemy race (blue aliens) and raised as his own. And in Avengers 2 they clarified that the infinity stones are advanced computers.
It's just not the ET type nor the green/blue whatever type aliens.
Basically, In the Marvel universe, there are many aliens which look like a god compared to humans but they aren't actual gods.
Funny thing is that in the upcoming Thor movie a woman "Hela" will destroy thor's hammer because of reasons. And technically she will defeat Thor at some point in the movie. I guess by the end Thor will win with the help of others.

Out of curiosity, why is Thor's hammer special if they're so high-tech? Like why can't it be lifted by normal people? I'm a huge Medievalist, but I wouldn't take my longsword to a gunfight (well, I would take it as backup weapon, but I'd want a rifle or something...) and I'm not really sure it makes any sense to have these alien people in a technologically advanced society using martial weapons. The point of Thor's hammer looking goofy in the old artwork is that it's not supposed to look like an actual because it's magical. If it's not magical, why doesn't he just have a real looking war hammer?
Hela is probably derived from Hel (another Norse god), just an observation

They never discussed why is the hammer special. Maybe it's just a play by thor's father. Because Odin controls who can use the hammer. In Thor 1 he cast out Thor and took the hammer away. So you can argue that Odin has the controller. :D It's a weapon. It can control weather and can force lightning strikes. Thor is strong. We don't know much about Vision either. He is a robot guy. And he can also lift the hammer. So he is either worthy or his computer brain figured out how to lift the hammer. Who knows?
Loki's staff was also an ordinary staff until they revealed that it's a staff with an infinity stone.

my favourite for examples is HomeAlone, if you swapped the position of adult and child in that film its no longer a "funny family film" but a brutal torture horror film, where an adult defends his home against two kids trying to break in by burning them and shooting them etc (and all the things he did to them)
