Yup my mother pretended like she was broke 24/7 and wouldn’t give me anything. She took my dad and my 2 older brothers dad to the cleaners. As soon as she stopped getting child support from my brothers dad she divorced my dad to get child support for me. She also worked and made at least 60k a year on top of all the extra alimony and child support she was getting. Any other expenses she had were getting paid for by the various guys she was dating. She was going on trips, buying new clothes, going to the casino. When I turned 16 and wanted a car she said she was broke and refused to help me at all and I had to work all summer to buy a beat down car.

When it came time for me to go to college she took out a student loan for me and said she would make the payments. Never paid it. A year and a half later I got a call saying they were going to garnish my wages and the interest had accumulated to 4k more than the principal balance. When I confronted her about it she said she told me I had to make the payments even though I didn’t have a job when I was at college.

She hasn’t given me money since the age of 18 (33 now). Come to find out about 5 years ago she opened a credit card in my name and maxed it out and would make the minimum payment every once in a while, missing payments for months in between. She ended up costing me 8k. No sorry from her, no apologies. She still deflects all responsibility. I haven’t talked to her in about 3 years now.

Two things to unpack with that common refrain.

1) There's a pretty good chance that the woman was so toxic the man left on his own even though he wasn't forced out legally.

2) It conflates two groups. a) men who wanted to be fathers but had their children taken away from them and b) men who never wanted to be fathers in the first place but were forced into it because the law doesn't allow them a choice.

I have a story close to this, my sisters friend mum broke up with the dad who was really nice and she made him move from England to Australia and divorced him and she got rid of his right because he had epilepsy which wasn’t a problem before they broke up and took 70% of his money and 70 percent was a lot because he had an awesome job in England.
