You should try unplugging from social media. I believe you can suspend your accounts, but not delete? Reddit is anonymous, and makes for better conversation IMO. I left SM about a year ago and for me, is a rediscovery of self.

People really are becoming dumber though. Just look through youtube comments. People can barely fucking string together a coherent sentence anymore. No one seems capable of critical thinking either, if their tv box says it, then it must be so. In another 10, 20, or so years, these Mongoloids will outnumber us.

Confirmation bias is a problem, though, as is the availability bias. Literacy rates, education rates, etc are going up, not down. GDP per capita is going up, not down. There was plenty of crap and drama generated in years past as well, but didn't get preserved.

Regarding usage of smartphones and social media, they can be controlled. I have a smartphone, but with no FB/Messenger/Whatsapp/etc installed. Not even email is configured. I have a FB account, but I only ever access it via the desktop. Anyone who spews toxicity or drama just gets un-followed. Not a huge deal.

My son deleted FB with this assumption, but it turns out that people generally won't call you. So he and his girlfriend were just left out of everyone's plans and get-togethers. Since they actually wanted to have social lives, they signed up again.

I unplugged Facebook a while back and the lack of a constant barrage of meaningless and insipid bullshit has made my days much more enjoyable.

You have a good point. I wouldn't blame you for quitting. I have considered it as well, and know people who never joined.

I am sticking with it, though. Social media is a tool that can do a lot of good. It is like we were all given hammers without being told what they were good for, so a lot of people bashed their own heads in, while others bashed in the heads friends, family and people who annoyed them. The problem isn't with the hammer - there is still nothing better for putting a nail into wood. The problem is that people are idiots.

My solution - use the tool, but don't be an idiot.

Make sure you understand the privacy settings and use them. Organize your Facebook friends into Privacy Groups and use them, or at least use the built-in ones Facebook provides, like "Acquaintances" and "Restricted."

Only friend people you know on Facebook. If organizing your friends in to Privacy Groups is too much work, maybe you have too many Facebook friends? How well do you know these people?

Only follow legitimate news sources on Twitter, and not people you don't know. Twitter can be a great news ticker, or it can show you the most vile humanity has to offer. You can decide for yourself which you want.

Don't look at your Facebook newsfeed (the home page). Bookmark the other pages and look at those instead.

You get the idea - the above links are innocuous and aren't likely to lead to negative interaction.

Finally, make some real life friends and seek them out more. Using social media exclusively can be like the social equivalent of only eating fast food; it's okay once in a while when you have to, but if that's all you eat, it is unhealthy.

Also join private groups of people who share your interests. Those can be awesome!

Smartphones can be really, really useful even if you don’t touch social media with a 10m barge pole. The app ecosystem for utilities and tools is massively impressive, and is the single biggest reason why I would not revert back to a flip phone even if I did abandon every last vestige of social media (including Reddit).

Hell, it’s why I have two phones: an iPhone for everyday use that’s fully loaded, and a dual-SIM Nokia 6.1 for travel purposes (cheap enough for me to not hurt much of it gets lost, stolen or confiscated by constitutionally illegal seizure at the US border).

I use my smartphone for work as a driver and for YouTube. The majority of the good MGTOW content is on YouTube. Also, my data plan is tax deductible.

I left social media when myspace died. Even then I saw there were going to be serious societal ramifications. I wasn't wrong.

I held out on getting a smartphone until 2014. I saw the societal ramifications of that coming as well. I still have the same phone.

Social media and technology is a lot like drinking or any other vice. Use responsibly.

You can tell this to someone and they will be like.. '' yeah totally, that's true'', just to get you off their back because they are too important to indulge in your knowledge. Another possibility is that their life is a wreck and their mind is filled with so much trash that there is no space for nothing real.

If you get rid of 50% of social media, you will not necessarily be happy or content right away but you will not be miserable that's for sure. I say 50% because you are bound to still use reddit and surf the net but if you manage a 90 or even a 100.. than know that a statue should be erected for your accomplishment.

Everyone has been long gone.
