23m East coast USA. Its sounds insecure. Most people I see use it as a way to get what they need and assume no responsiblity. Its like a "hey you're the expert here" type of questioning. So if your info blows up in their face they can blame you.

I expect most people my age not to know anything practical. Its irritating.

29 male Toronto. I do find it quite annoying. I work in the digital media environment and thats all that happens when I am working with young women. In my experience it's particularly common amongst white females (not to sound racist but this is my experience). When in a meeting with a client, the whole room sounds like frogs croaking away. In the absence of my team there is a time when a client expressed to me how annoyed he was by the constant frog noises from the women in my group. Some of the women on my team are attractive but it becomes a major turn off when they make those croaky frog noises when they speak. I just don't get it

Vocal fry I thought was defined as women pushing their voice down into scratchy territory. From the comments here, I dont think everyone is describing the same phenomena.

I certainly notice it at work. I think american women are just so masculine that they don't realize it. If you watch old movies, you can see and hear how differently people talked. It seems women used to talk effeminately, and with endearing tone. Now everyone has a raspy whisper to their voice.

That’s the tone and frequency of women speaking with vocal fry is the same as when I start to vomit. Listening to it turns my stomach.

I definitely find it irritating. It sounds like women are trying to sound flirtatious at all times. But to me, it doesn't sound attractive, just annoying and send the message that you flirt w/ everyone (which is a turnoff)

Aye, shit's kinda annoying to hear from my mom 24/7. I honestly think that's the only way she knows how to speak. I'd be hard-pressed to remember a single sentence that she was able to say without sounding like a confused child.

It's interesting you mention this. I'm retired, 59, taking a summer Chem class (for fun, don't ask). And all I hear is "literally so hard..." or " I'm sooooo... tired" or this is "sooo... hard". Mostly from the women and effeminate men. It is hard, but seems like everyone whines instead of sucking it up. Times sure have changed.

21M. I can't stand hearing someone who speaks like that with a constant upward inflection. You tend to naturally do it when asking a question, but nowadays for girls my age do it without even noticing (at least I think?).

It reminds me of my 13 year old self, incredibly neurotic and unsure about what I'm going to say.

I also hate it when people excessively use filler words.

Like, uhhh, like, you know, like this. Filler words are alright when you connect the ends of sentences and make a meaningful phrase, but just saying them for the sake of simply saying something in between thinking of what to say, makes you look clueless and unsure.

I do this. I was raised around 3 sisters and a mom and naturally learned jt. It sucks when im talking to most men because i can tell they get frustrated. But no one ever calls me out on it but now i know this is definitely a issue.

The upward inflection is annoying. But not nearly as annoying as the constant use of the word “like” throughout someone’s dialog. Absolutely grated on my last nerve. “And I was, like....”. Ugh, just tell me what you did! Or better yet, don’t.

Yep I do think this is very irritating. Also, using "lol" before or after a statement is the internet equivalent of what you speak of.
