Hmmmm, you’re a gambling addict with a pill addiction...I wonder what the fucking problem might be?

Before you go thinking I’m just an asshole who doesn’t understand....I also suffered a similar injury. Same types of post concussion/brain injury symptoms. The worst of it lasted a year, some of the symptoms I still struggle with over a decade later, one in particular is permanent and related to my memory.

Wanna know how I got out of it? Fucking discipline and accepting that the new “me” would never be the same as the old “me”.

I will say I was fortunate that my doctor and the neurologist I was seeing both refused to put me on any sort of painkillers, sleep aids or opiates. Both flat out said “fuck that, that’s the last thing you need at your age, you WILL be hooked for life”. My doctor in particular was a hard ass Eastern European and looked like he wanted to slap me for asking the question. He basically told me to man up, deal with the symptoms and eventually they would either get better or I would get better at dealing with them.

I have the same advice for you.

Edit: after looking at your post history changed you to gambling addict not professional gambler.

Wanna know how I got out of it? Fucking discipline and accepting that the new “me” would never be the same as the old “me” ... man up, deal with the symptoms and eventually they would either get better or I would get better at dealing with them.

Reminds me of what Daredevil said to the disabled kid in the beginning of The Defenders:

  • That money is really gonna help your parents. But for you, from here on out it's only gonna get harder, Aaron. You realize you're only at mile one of the marathon, right? Everybody's gonna tell you how to feel. Doctors are gonna tell you to stay positive. Your family's gonna tell you not to feel sorry for yourself. Your therapist is gonna tell you not to be angry.

  • The kid says, "I just want my life back."

  • Daredevil: They can't give you that. Maybe you'll walk again. I hope so. But maybe you won't. But your ability to get through it as this gets harder - that is a hundred times more powerful than slapping a smile on your face and pretending like everything's just fine. <sighs> Do you understand? Hey, listen ... no one can give you your life back, Aaron. You have ... You gotta take it back.

[–]Frankdux77 1 points1 points1 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Yeah, that’s the problem with neurologist, telling you to man up is about the stupidest thing a doctor would tell you and shows how far behind the medical community is in treating concussions. The top doctor at Mayo Clinic even said, he can’t refer his patients to any other doctor because there is so much bad advice.

I can’t really go with the accept the new me mentality. It’s like telling someone with 2 broken legs to run a marathon and suck it up.

professional gambler and addict can be blurred at times. To be the best in the world, you have to be addicted. I didn’t manage my bankroll and screwed up. it certainly didn’t help that I had my pain and made bad decisions while on it, but the pain was there after I won a big tourney. it’s not related to my wins/losses.

Funny, man told you he didn't do painkillers, and instead of curiously asking his solution, you shrug it off

[–]Frankdux77 1 points1 points1 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I didn’t do painkillers for 4 years after my accident and I knew that it was bad for me. I was desperate.

You came here for help and insight. Either take it, or don't.

Just don't argue when you are getting what you asked for. Normally guys are shit on, but unlike most newbies, you actually lift, means you're probsbly worth the time to swap notes and see what sticks

[–]gettingmymojobackMRP APPROVED1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You’ve got DEER down to an art form. Add that to your addiction.

You’re an addict x3.

News flash, you can’t heal from a TBI. Once the damage is permanent, it’s permanent. I’d figure 6 years on you might have clued into that.

Whatever effects you have from the actual injury can be managed. However from what little you’ve shown here, I’d say 90% of yours are a combination of drugs and psychological. You can chose how you want to deal with those.

Or not. Maybe you’ll feel better after the next time you lose $400k sports betting.

It's like telling someone with 2 broken legs to run a marathon and suck it up.

I for one have mad respect for those dudes completing marathons on one leg and in wheelchairs. Yes, you may not be able to run at full speed on two legs anymore, but there is always a way to get across the finish line.

"I can't really go with the accept the new me mentality. It's like telling someone with 2 broken legs to run a marathon and suck it up."

No, it's not.

It's more like telling a marathon runner who loses his legs to go join the Paralympics.

You said there's no fix. So either accept that you'll never be the same, and adjust/adapt accordingly, or... I don't know what else. That's literally your only option, that I can see. Other than waiting around for the doctors to fix it.

We all have our problems, imperfections, and fundamental limitations. Admittedly, yours seem worse than most, and less your own fault than most. I'm sorry.

We all must play the best game we can with the hand we're dealt, nonetheless. When it comes to sexual strategy or saving your marriage, and to developing your masculinity, the sidebar readings and this subreddit can teach you how to best play your hand as a man in this world. More, we can't promise.

Welcome to MRP.

Wow.

Lots to unpack.

First, I feel you. My fall from alpha was precipitated by getting rearended at 90mph by a pickup truck driven by a junkie. I was on a motorcycle. It was a hit and run. Chronic pain, depression, weight gain, alcohol abuse...all contributed to wife completely losing attraction for me. I turned into a miserable fuck. Took 5 years before I found this place and completely turned my life around. That took 2 years btw. 7 miserable years.

I'm now happier than I ever was, though. Life back on track, my rules, my castle.

Back to you.

So, first, you lost attraction in her eyes by getting hurt. No, not fair, not Disney, not "stand by your man" but that's the plain truth. Gods don't bleed. You bled, so you're just human.

Two, you never had a stable income even before the accident, and furthermore, she carried your ass for two years during the recovery period. In womanese you're not a provider, and worse, are a resource sucker that mommy has to take care of. Both attraction killers.

Three, I assume baby fever means she was hitting the wall. So by definition she was not thinking clearly. You missed a leadership opportunity and just allowed her to both adopt and get pregnant when your relationship is in the most fragile spot it ever was. You failed to lead. You failed to tell her no. Now you're resentful of of your own children. Think that doesn't telegraph to the wife? You made the bed, now you got to lie in it. Adding kids to an unstable mix NEVER works.

( I am very active in the lifestyle/BDSM scene. As such, I get asked a lot about opening relationships. My advice is always,"Adding others is a magnifying glass. If you're happy, in a good place, and have your eyes open, then the magnification is of the goodness. If you're having issues, want to low-key fuck someone else, or are looking to save a relationship, well those negative feelings get magnified by adding more to the mix.")

Kids are magnifying glasses too.

Fourth... you moved states. One of the most stressful things you can do with a young family.

5 - pain pills. Fix that.

6 - minimal sleep.Fix that.

7 - You're not working at all. Fix that.

8 - She has No attraction to you. You are a burden to her.

9 - You are expecting "support" from your wife. That's not going to happen, and furthermore it lowers your value even more because what MAN needs support from his wife.

10 - ( ten already?) You're floating through life, allowing external events to affect you without taking agency for anything. To summarize, your life is shitty. To be honest there's no easy way out. You got a raw deal. But you weren't much of a man before the accident so I can see how this knocked your ship way off course, because you didn't really have a course planned out in the first place.

So. Get a job. Get off the pain pills. Get some sleep. Follow the same steps every sad fuck who finds their way here has to to self actualize and start taking responsibility for yourself and your decisions. Where you are right now is a direct result of the sum of your decisions. Your fault. Make a choice. Get to work. http://www.akimbocomics.com/?p=1086

[–]Frankdux770 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I don’t know if this is my new baseline now and this is how my pain will be for the rest of my life. If it is, I’m screwed and working a full time is legit not possible. I had a course planned out that made logical sense, I just had unforeseen things occur and subsequently made poor decisions after.

[–]GargantuaBlarg29 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

Salvage what?

No really...what are you trying to salvage? Because it seems like your current ability to even get through life is fucked. And the reason sucks...like it sounds like it truly truly sucks. But you're not going to be able to plot a course a build a damn thing in life until you figure out just how to get by mentally on a day to day basis.

The brain is a confusing thing to treat...and you heard it yourself that few recover and Dr.s don't know why. So at some point youre going to have to stop holding out your life until you're fixed...and just accept that the bar for you was raised after that accident and you're going to have to hunker down and figure out how to build what you can from here working with what you've got. I'm not saying stop looking for a solution...I'm saying stop expecting to find one. When our blue pill minds all got wrecked when we realized that hypergamy was real...some of us thought in some way "how can I use these tools to get back to the idea of true love" to get back to the way it was...to use red pill tools for a blue pill goal as they say. At some point we had to just admit that that wasn't happening. That's not reality. And build a life from there. Do the same.

Now...What's your plan moving forward?

[–]Frankdux77 1 points1 points1 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I’m 1 month off opioids. I was taking on average 20mg hydrocodone a day to get by. I was never using to get high, i literally have pain/discomfort 24/7. It feels like a vice is on my head at low pressure constantly and the Vicodin is only thing that relieved that pressure and made me feel as though I could get through life. Since I stopped, I’m getting3-4 hours sleep a night.

I know long term; it only makes things worse and contributes to brain fog. I’m making trips back and forth to Mayo who so far as done facet neck injections and optimized my meds. Seeing another specialist next week. If my pain doesn’t get under control, I’ll be doing 3 week pain management clinic in a couple months.

I just started vision therapy, and will be doing 12 days in a row of their concussion program starting next month.

I’m exercising and meditating daily.

I’ve been reading about specialist in Canada who believes hormone therapy is way to treat PCS. My testosterone levels were low and should be twice as much to get in the optimal range for patients with PCS. My friend who went there who has also suffered for 5+ years got significantly better from this therapy.

This is why I can’t just accept the new me. There must be some answer why I have these symptoms daily. Brain fog is so ambiguous and no one really can’t understand how fucking bad it is unless you have it. I have to fake every second of my life and act like I’m having fun when in reality, I just want to feel normal.

So basically I understand why no one would want to be around me. I don’t want to bring others down and with the stress of raising 2 kids, it’s hard for any marriage to not feel overwhelmed. I thing I do a good job of dealing with my pain and not letting it show all the time and make family life fun, but it definitely is apparent I’m struggling.

I don’t know what advice I’m looking for. Because it’s invisible injury, my family and friends just say suck it up and be a man, do anything. I guess I’m just clearly in a bad spot for a variety of reasons, and maybe I just need to focus on myself and then once I’m bette, address other areas. And if I can’t get better, then get divorced since it clearly can’t sustain this much longer.

[–]hystericalbonding2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

If my pain doesn’t get under control, I’ll be doing 3 week pain management clinic in a couple months.

If it's a multidisciplinary program with a return to work focus, that's your best bet. If it's anything else, like a nerve block factory, then keep shopping for a decent clinic. If they don't tackle the gambling and other issues that you have undoubtedly omitted, then you're wasting your time.

I'm not convinced that you want solutions, though. As /u/Rian_Stone said, you were offered a potential solution, and just shrugged it off instead of exploring options. It seems like a victim puke to me.

I'm curious what /u/Scurvemuch thinks about the recent literature associating early return to activity with reduced symptoms after concussion. It strikes me as a difficult chicken and egg question, but probably off topic, since we'd be stupid to give medical advice for this.

[–]TaipanshimshonMRP APPROVED1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

there is not a lot of good literature on return to work after post concussive syndrome, ) not just concussion.

A person should SHOW that they want to go back and possibly fail.

this can become a problem for keeping one's job however, so not fully a medical question.

[–]TaipanshimshonMRP APPROVED0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The return to work question is being debated. But I'll answer more fully later

Saying neurologist told him pain meds were bad idea was not a solution. I’ve seen doctors all over country at best hospitals. Most have give horrible advice. I get the , “I’m just using my PCS/brain injury as an excuse” all the fucking time.

I listen to that Kwik brain podcast about not using injuries as an excuse for limiting beliefs. I get the merit of that and you need to push yourself out of your comfort zone, but when you wake up with pounding headache and feeling like you are hungover every day for 6 years, it feels very fucking real.

[–]Rian_StoneHard Core Navy Red1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Maybe it's BS, maybe it's not. I'm not sure why you're so convinced it was BS before hearing the how, or why it worked for him?

Especially when you're so willing to take the medical advice of a podcast.

[–]hystericalbonding1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Saying neurologist told him pain meds were bad idea was not a solution

No shit - and you weren't the least bit curious what he did instead of taking narcotics.

I’ve seen doctors all over country at best hospitals

That statement means almost nothing to me.

Fuck it. I was writing a big thing about the hazards of focusing on symptoms, importance of a multidisciplinary, holistic approach, and a bunch of other stuff, but I deleted it. I'm sticking with my original assertion that you're a special snowflake with an impossible situation that was so unique that you felt that it would be worth posting your victim puke in the main sub instead of askMRP.

[–]Marcus_Aurtrillius0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm not sure what you're looking for here either.

I'm pretty new here, still getting my shit together, but I do know the basic mantra of MRP is to MAN UP. Own your shit, lift, sidebar. That's how you man up.

You've already said your family tells you to man up and you hate it, doctors were dumb to tell /u/gettingmymojoback to man up, you flat out dismissed his suggestion and the suggestions of others...

You struggle to hold down a job. Let me say straight up that, fixing yourself, gaming your wife and leading your family/marriage is a full time job, especially starting out. Since my "changes" started I've been enduring constant shit tests cause she wants to see if it's real. Maybe things get easier for the vets, where they cam do things on auto-pilot, but I kinda doubt that (they can chime in if they want). I see MRP as a lifetime thing.

You need to focus on YOUR BRAIN first. And all you will hear in this sub is to MAN UP, which you don't want to hear. And honestly, fixing your wife or family should be the last thing on your mind. It sounds like you've got a pretty damn serious injury. You need to take care of that before you can even begin to focus on the other stuff. How are you going to read all the Sidebar material in your free time if you can't even focus at work, where you're getting paid?

No one can offer you any shortcuts here. The message is always the same. I'm rooting for you. My brother was a "pro" poker player before Black Friday hit, and I have several friends in the community. I know how rough it is. And you got a raw deal. So I really hope you get the help you need. Hang in there.

[–]johneyapocalypseTold Death to Fuck Off - MRP is easy mode0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

Been living for a while at death's doorstep.

Not too long ago I walked through that doorway - everything got way worse - like 10 out of 10 bad - and I somehow managed to get through to the other side. Future still isn't so rosy.

I also have "brain" issues - they were exacerbated by the treatment for my illness. Holy hell were they exacerbated. Didn't know medicine could do that to you.

And then there's the forgetfulness. The dullness. My mind drifting away like it's no longer in my own body. Damn.

I understand the frustration. I fucking hate it.

I do not let it get me down. If I do, then I go down with it. That simple.

Lack of sleep is the killer, man. Prioritize sleep likes it's the only fucking thing you have left on earth because it sounds like it might be. I still fail in this regard myself. It's not easy. An active brain can make it tough.

You have to man up. Either that or choose to lay down and die. I faced that same choice and stumbled upon this place.

Some of what you read may sound like bravado. May even sound silly. But the reality is that there is experience here and there is insight. I read this post in Real Alpha. I can't find it now. A bunch of dudes cautioned the Real Alpha guy to be careful, he was potentially fucking with men's lives. Real men with real lives. Damn, that touched me.

You write above that "telling you to man up is the about the stupidest thing a doctor would tell you" yet I'm telling you that you must man up. Seriously. I never thought I could get so low. I was planning my own funeral. I was writing notes for my children to read in the future, long after I was gone.

When you have no more left you only have yourself, man. I repulsed the people around me.

So fucking what? That's life. You either choose to move forward or you don't. You know the right choice, the only choice.

Read about stoicism. It helped me a lot.

[–]johneyapocalypseTold Death to Fuck Off - MRP is easy mode0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

So you've touched a nerve and I have a surplus of time on my hands today.

Here's one of the most important things I have learned during my "journey," whether I like it or not: illness repels. It sounds cheap and mean and no damn fun at all, but it's so goddamned true.

When I was at my lowest point, someone close to me was diagnosed with something awful. Her brain was involved and her illness was terrible. Depressed and alone, bemoaning her horrible prognosis, worried for the future, and I felt… repulsed. I didn't want to feel that way.

There's a reason they kick the sick wolf out of the pack.

No matter how tough it gets you can choose to manage it all with strength and with dignity. Make that choice.

[–]johneyapocalypseTold Death to Fuck Off - MRP is easy mode1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Last thing and I'll stop talking to myself.

You still have the ability - even when it seems like everything fucking sucks - to give your child the best day ever. To go out with the family and make memories that will last forever.

You have so much more strength than you realize and that strength can impact those around you, in ways you can't even imagine.

Man, some of the most amazing memories of our lives were made when the rest of the world was falling apart for me. I am positively impacting my children's lives and they will always have that.

Find your strength.

Sorry to hear about your accident and lingering symptoms. The Red Pill works to fix your life and get you women, not a woman. Perhaps this one isnt salvageable, perhaps it is. It doesnt matter much when prescribing the fix.
