This post was immediately inspired yesterday from this post http://www.reddit.com/r/MensRights/comments/z37ma/i_need_feminism_because/ , but it has been something on my mind for sometime here in r/mensrights.
My name is Patrick and I'm 25.
I thought [1] /r/mensrights was going to be about raising awareness to create better fairness for men's rights that have been neglected and abused.
I wanted this to be a place where ideas were shared to increase consciousness about the need to advocate for men's rights in a changing world.
I thought this was a place where avenues of advocacy could be made available to men and men's allies to create a fairer and more equal stance in front of the law and society.
After some time now, I personally believe that [2] /r/mensrights is at risk to becoming another [3] /r/atheism, an often hateful subreddit that circlejerks for the benefits of its own by resorting too-often to simply hating on outsiders instead of educating others dealing with the actual issues it claims to represent.
I want this to be a place where the men's rights agenda forward positively through awareness and outreach.
I get that [4] /r/atheism is sort of a 'coming out' party for atheists and they have a lot of pent up anger that they may need to release. I also understand that [5] /r/mensrights is also a safe place to vent the frustration of a situationally oppressed minority. But wouldn't we be better off to lead by example, stick to the facts, and keep the 'shit-slinging' somewhere else?
This isn't to say I haven't seen many good posts here. For example: a recent one tackling the myth of unfair wages for women, or another regarding how fathers are often prevented from equal access to their children.
I mean to say that I'd prefer [6] /r/mensrights to care about it's image, to present itself well, and state it's cases well. I feel as though many posts only result in inspiring hate and anger or division and separation instead of inspiring potential allies and creating of ways and means for needed change. IMHO, personally I find it too often to be a bunch of "hating on the other side" rather than getting down to the issues and educating others on why men need more advocacy to have more equitable stances in society where need-be and in the eyes of the law. Wouldn't we be most constructive in spreading consciousness and winning allies by creating a welcoming atmosphere of civil dialogue? I personally believe there is too much hateful angry rhetoric here to say we've achieved that atmosphere thus far.
What do you say /r/mensrights? Am I way off base here or does anyone else share these sentiments? Is this only a place to find one's own and get affirmative support or can it also be a place of civility, personal respect, honor, and accurate informative information?
I look forward to what I hope can be a constructive conversation regarding the mission of men's rights and the acceptable and most constructive ways and means to achieve it's goals here in r/mensrights. Please forgive any grammar or spelling mistakes.
