I'm not part of AVFM, but I have to say I completely agree with Paul Elam on this. This absolutely needs questioning. Look at how the campaigners phrase things (from the BBC article):

"Recognize speech that trivializes or glorifies violence against girls and women as hate speech and make a commitment that you will not tolerate this content.
"Effectively train moderators to recognize and remove gender-based hate speech.
"Effectively train moderators to understand how online harassment differently affects women and men, in part due to the real-world pandemic of violence against women."

Notice that the first demand isn't particularly objectionable. No one's really going to be upset if they can't upload rape jokes to Facebook, are they? There's plenty of places on t'internet for such stuff, just as there is for other content Facebook doesn't allow (such as nudity).

But now look at the second and third. This is where things get decidedly slimy. You see the moderators have to be trained to spot 'gender-based hate speech'. And who's going to be carrying out this training? Let's see what Facebook says:

To ensure that our training is robust, we will work with legal experts and others, including members of the women’s coalition to identify resources or highlight areas of particular concern for inclusion in the training.

This I find really worrying. As I'm sure we're all aware, people's definitions of 'hate' and 'harassment' can be, shall we say, highly selectively applied. Remember that this sub-reddit is described by the SPLC on a page called 'Misogyny: The Sites' as:

notable for the anger it shows toward any program designed to help women.

Given the frequency with which this politically biased interpretation-masquerading-as-fact is repeated, one suspects it wouldn't be long before men's groups were banned on Facebook if these 'members of the women's coalition' play a significant role in shaping the way their policies are applied.

We absolutely do not want gender feminists getting control over what constitutes 'hate speech', even for a private company like Facebook. That would not be a good thing at all. I doubt it would end there.

Hopefully this will turn out to be an overreaction, but frankly I think we should all err on the side of caution. Please make your feelings known. Please make it clear that you don't consider women's advocates groups to be neutral sources on the question of what constitutes 'gender based hate speech', and remind Facebook that it ought to remain as neutral as possible on such questions.
