A month ago, a friend of mine in California (he's a male college instructor) was accused of sexual harassment by one of his female students. The claims were bogus, and it turns out that after mediating with a Title IX investigator, the case was closed as not worthy of investigating or determining appropriateness. And yet the student was allowed to remain in his class if she wanted to. She chose to stay. My friend asked the investigator how to handle her remaining in the class since he felt the student's claim was bogus. The investigator explained that the claim may be invalid but it was still her feeling that counted. My friend explained that she had already shown behavioral problems before her charge. To that, he was told nothing can be done, and in fact that my friend might be accused of being retaliatory for talking about her past behavioral issues. Then he was told "keep your distance" since you don't want to be accused of retaliating against her. Also, be sure that the student keeps a high grade.

This is how the world turns and how a female student can put a college teacher into a Catch-22: Make bogus claims against a college instructor, and after the case is closed, have the upper hand. By the way, I am hearing of similar issues now in the private sector where claims are made to HR.
