This article did nothing to prove to me that there is no such thing as a fake geek. There are posers in all sectors of society. Suddenly being geek is in fashion and people (male and female) are jumping on the bandwagon. Here is a good test as to whether someone is a fake geek or not. Ask them if they know what a D20 is. If they don't, they're not the real deal.

One of the things that really boils my blood about this is how quickly feminism will bang the drum of cultural appropriation for various different people, but when it's male dominated culture they see it fine to appropriate it forcefully. As in, not adding to nerd culture by adding their own creations, but by tearing down or changing the existing culture under the guise of removing misogyny when it's clearly just attempting to silence male sexuality.

I'm trying desperately to avoid a massive diatribe on this but as Fun2saymukluks posted, there are posers in all sectors of society. Feminists rightly point out how hard it can be for women in male spaces, but completely ignore the automatic privledge they get in those spaces. Both of these feed into the fake geek issue - not even getting started on the fact that yeah, females often appropriate geek culture.

I really believe that all of the complaints from feminists about the way women are sexually objectified stem from insecurity and jealousy.

While I cannot state with any surety the motive behind the fake geek comments I suspect that it has more to do with lack of knowledge about subject matter more than how people are dressed. I suspect thatmore women were targeted for these comments because they were more noticeable in the crowd.

As for the pin up calander. She just needs to get over herself. I would be greatly surprised if anyone had any problems with her creating a calendar targeted to people who are not hetero males. She could seven use sexualized men! It wouldn't be hard to find them as most men in comic books end up with amazing physiques. Add something to the convention rather than just complaining about it!

I refuse to read a piece on gender written by someone who starts off by praising something as misandrist as Xena.
