To some degree, yes. Even if we didn't do it explicitly, virtually every society that I'm aware of associates certain things with the feminine and certain ones with the masculine. The problem though seems to arise not from this categorization, but how we police the borders. Who is allowed to express what, in what space, and how. So problematic definitions (if we assume that the definitions presented are largely agreeable) are mostly so when they aren't used in such a way as to let people cross the boundaries. E.g., men must always be masculine (or else!). So cross dressers are looked down upon because they're violating those established borders (and arguably performing femininity wrong, but I think that's less relevant here).

It shows how much more attack men face than women. We just never wear dresses or otherwise cross the line and forget about it (internalize it).

Genderqueer here. The issues of defining masculinity and femininity is pretty much impossible, we just haven't realized it yet. The whole "gender is a social construct" idea is, in my opinion, pretty spot on. Gender has nothing to do with genitalia, it's all mental. So to try and make two separate genders with their own prescribed set of traits (masculine vs. feminine) is ridiculous.

The issue that a lot of people take with male cross-dressing has to do with aggression, in my opinion. For a woman to dress as a man is perceived as an aggressive act by society. Back in the olden days, it was a way of rebelling against male dominance. Now, while it's more of a style preference (for the most part), this view still has repercussions. The flip side is that it is viewed as submissive for a man to dress in a woman's clothing because that would be a "step down" for the man. Men and women are guilty of making this judgement. There are manly female styles, but very rarely are there womanly male styles. People make a lot more judgements based on a man's appearance than they do a woman's.

I'm hoping this made an ounce of sense. Masculinity/Femininity is a pretty murky area, especially when you don't even know what one or the other feels like to begin with.

TL:DR The entire issue is fucked, gender is what you want it to be, and no one has the right to tell you how to dress.

I think all but the traditionalists among us agree that rigid gender boundaries do no one any good, and nowadays this is more of a men's issue because it disproportionately affects men.

It's interesting to note that most radical feminists ("radical" denotes a specific ideological branch) hate transsexuals, with particular ire reserved for trans women (female-to-male). To both the ultra-conservatives and the rad-fems, having a penis once makes you a man forever.

Any answer you get is going to be opinion and politically based. Personally I see no problem with having an oppositional system when it comes to human personalities and genders. Feminists have pushed for a blurring of the lines and often a removal of such delimiters but concrete and finite roles allow for an easier understanding of people.
