I recently got into a discussion on facebook about the "wage gap" after I posted a video that was on here yesterday. This person used an argument that I have seen before, which is that women aren't really "choosing" to work fewer hours and take more time off, they are just being influenced by a society which tells them that they should only stay home and raise children. Therefore, the wage gap is real and women are being discriminated against.

I'm having a hard time responding to this kind of argument which I find is basically a way to shut down discussion. I guess I'm just supposed to say "oh yeah, you're right, never mind". It is such a vague concept, in the way that none of the choices a person makes are beyond the influence of external factors. Is it really something that can be quantified or proven? What makes someone's choice more, or less, real or authentic?

I need insight.
